Tarnish our tourism image,\u201d the caption read. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Some netizens criticised the lack of English translations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cJust go somewhere else and don\u2019t patronise. If they don\u2019t bother to translate then no need to eat there,\u201d one commenter wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Xi\u2019an Impression has several outlets across Singapore, including one at Kinex.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"lg:text-28 lg:leading-33.6px pt-md font-primary text-24 font-bold leading-1.2\">Pictures may not be enough<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">When Stomp visited the outlet on April 1, there were no English translations for the menu items. The signboards displayed clear photos of what each dish looked like, with prices listed in Chinese.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">A Chinese customer, who declined to be named, told Stomp she had seen non-Chinese diners order successfully in past occasions when she patronised the eatery. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Though there are no English labels for the dishes, she said the pictures on the menu signboards can help those customers understand the restaurant\u2019s offerings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">However, Ms Siti Aminah, 54, who frequents halal-certified Chinese restaurants, said that while images can be helpful, they may not be sufficient on their own, as it is difficult to tell what ingredients are used from pictures alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The teacher added that she has previously struggled to order from Chinese-language menus on behalf of friends. She noted that English descriptions, alongside images, would make it easier for customers to understand the dishes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cFor restaurants with only Chinese characters, we know these are for Chinese customers, so we may not go in,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"lg:text-28 lg:leading-33.6px pt-md font-primary text-24 font-bold leading-1.2\">\u2018No need to use English\u2019: manager<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">When approached by Stomp, the manager of Xi\u2019an Impression said she was unaware of the Reddit discussion and that the eatery has no plans to introduce English translations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The manager, who did not wish to be named, said the restaurant rarely saw non-Chinese customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cWe sell Chinese food. There is no need to use English,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"lg:text-28 lg:leading-33.6px pt-md font-primary text-24 font-bold leading-1.2\">Chef says English menus are a \u2018basic service requirement\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Elsewhere in Vision Exchange, there were at least 10 Chinese eateries across the first and second floors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">While posters on the walls of the eateries were largely in Chinese, menus at several stalls seen by Stomp included English labels for their dishes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Zhang Yong Chao, 34, head chef of He Jia Huan on the second floor, told Stomp that providing English menus and multilingual staff should be a \u201cbasic service requirement\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">He believes having English translations in his menu has helped his restaurant attract customers of various nationalities. The eatery also employs staff who can communicate in languages such as English and Burmese. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Although the ordering slips are printed only in Chinese, Mr Zhang said customers can match the serial numbers on the menu to those on the chit, or ask staff for assistance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Stomp understands that building management at Vision Exchange oversees only common areas and does not have purview over how individual tenants present their menus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">There are currently no regulations governing how food and beverage establishments <a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/multimedia\/graphics\/2025\/09\/singapore-hawker-signs\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">design their signage<\/a> in Singapore.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex flex-col gap-xl rounded-xl border border-primary-100 mt-xl\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stomp.sg\/assets\/stomp-comment-COLiWNMD.png\" alt=\"Stomp Comment\" class=\"absolute -mt-lg -ml-xs w-[203px] md:w-[255px]\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Have something to say?
