{"id":41003,"date":"2026-04-01T18:59:37","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T10:59:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=41003"},"modified":"2026-04-01T18:59:37","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T10:59:37","slug":"landlord-charged-over-allowing-premises-to-be-used-by-unlicensed-massage-parlour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=41003","title":{"rendered":"Landlord charged over allowing premises to be used by unlicensed massage parlour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 A landlord of a unit in Upper Serangoon Road was hauled to court on April 1 after allowing its tenant to operate an unlicensed massage establishment, which is an offence under a law currently under review to be tightened. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ganga Jamuna Electronics, which has its registered address at Block 767 Upper Serangoon Road, was said to have allowed the premises to be used by Ya Zhi Mei Health Beauty Spa. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This illegal arrangement was uncovered when police did enforcement checks in the area on Oct 30, 2025, said the police in a statement on March 31. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The operator of the unlicensed massage establishment subsequently <!-- -->pleaded guilty<!-- --> to the charge and was fined $10,000. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In their statement, the police urged landlords to conduct proper checks on their tenants and their intended use of rented premises. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">They added that they will not hesitate to take action against landlords who knowingly and complicitly allow their premises to be used by tenants for any illegal activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Court records state that the landlord is set to plead guilty in May. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">If convicted, the landlord can be fined up to $10,000, jailed for up to two years, or both. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In February<!-- -->, The Straits Times <!-- -->reported that<!-- --> the police<!-- --> <!-- -->were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/police-reviewing-massage-establishment-licensing-scheme-tighter-regulations-expected-soon?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">reviewing the Massage Establishments Act<\/span><\/a> to tighten regulations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Under the Act, operators of massage establishments are required to obtain a licence from the police. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It exempts open-concept massage establishments, and beauty salons and hair salons that do not provide massage services, as they are deemed to have a lower risk of vice activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">To avoid attention, vice operators have been known to register their businesses as these exempted establishments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs K.
