{"id":40196,"date":"2026-03-29T19:46:35","date_gmt":"2026-03-29T11:46:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=40196"},"modified":"2026-03-29T19:46:35","modified_gmt":"2026-03-29T11:46:35","slug":"fine-dining-restaurants-in-singapore-suffer-cancellations-due-to-iran-war-some-see-silver-lining-in-tourism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=40196","title":{"rendered":"Fine dining restaurants in Singapore suffer cancellations due to Iran war; some see silver lining in tourism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Restaurant operators who relocated from Singapore to Dubai found themselves caught off-guard as the city reeled from the initial attacks<\/p>\n<div xmlns:default=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" data-testid=\"article-body-container\">\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">[SINGAPORE] Just when things couldn\u2019t get worse for Singapore\u2019s beleaguered fine-dining scene, the ongoing Iran war has dealt an extra blow \u2013 several Michelin-starred restaurants have reported a spate of cancelled reservations since the conflict began.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">In the first two weeks of March, reservations at the two-Michelin-starred Saint Pierre and Shoukouwa fell by between 30 and 50 per cent, said Edina Hong, co-owner of Emmanuel Stroobant Group. Reservations have remained soft, \u201cwith no meaningful rebound in booking pace\u201d, she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Apart from the prevailing uncertainty around travel and the economy affecting diners\u2019 confidence, \u201call our cancellations were directly attributed to travel disruptions such as flight cancellations and delays, with several guests stranded in transit hubs such as Dubai\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Three-Michelin-starred Les Amis has also dealt with similar cancellations, said its director of culinary and operations, Sebastien Lepinoy. \u201cI don\u2019t anticipate any increase in the coming weeks, due to the situation in Iran,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Stock market uncertainty has also unnerved diners, and this has had \u201ca significant impact on our business operations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The impact has not been felt across the board. Some do a lot of events, so we\u2019re looking at different demographics and revenue streams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Labyrinth has been significantly hit by cancellations due to its high base of tourist diners, mainly from the US, Europe and Australia. \u201cMany flights have been cancelled and (guests) usually transit through the Middle East,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cEven in Australia, the government has been advising its citizens to save money and not travel so much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Julien Royer of the three-starred Odette reported a mixed impact, but said that higher costs were one definite outcome. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">He cited a silver lining in tourism and relocations. Like Thevar, he has encountered Dubai expats considering a permanent move to Singapore if the war were to continue indefinitely.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"-tracking-5% mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"heading-component\">Impact on Dubai F&amp;B<\/h2>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Restaurant operators who relocated from Singapore to Dubai found themselves caught off-guard as the city reeled from the initial attacks.<\/p>\n<div class=\"whitespace-normal mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-inline-image-component\">\n<figure class=\"table w-full\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/businesstimes\/8048be29fd433d04cd07a6db300905d9d99658516a945f790f78c8ee93971dfe\" alt=\"\" height=\"760\" width=\"1140\" class=\"block max-w-full w-full\"\/><figcaption class=\"m-0 mt-1 p-0 text-3xs text-gray-525 table-caption caption-bottom\">Maison Dali Dubai, one of three restaurants in the Culinary Arts Group, of which Tristan Farmer is culinary director. <span>PHOTO: MAISON DALI<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Tristin Farmer, formerly of Singapore\u2019s three-starred Zen, relocated to Dubai in 2025 as culinary director of the Culinary Arts Group, with three restaurants including Revolver and Maison Dali under his watch.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cBusiness has been greatly affected due to extremely low tourism, and a lot of residents leaving the city until things settle down,\u201d he said. \u201cRoads are quiet and businesses that are open have seen a drop of as much as 80 to 90 per cent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Despite \u201can eerie quietness that feels like Covid times\u201d, he credited the Dubai government\u2019s support in making the city safe for residents. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cLife goes on as per normal and the only difference is that there are missile warnings sent to our phones. When that happens, we find somewhere safe to stay until the all-clear message comes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">For now, the group has chosen to close all three restaurants temporarily. \u201cWe are waiting to see how things progress before deciding our next steps,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"whitespace-normal mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-inline-image-component\">\n<figure class=\"table w-full\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/businesstimes\/e4280b46718295b6323716b639977a30dc88531a6fbf5c42b1d5710408ef5c09\" alt=\"\" height=\"760\" width=\"1140\" class=\"block max-w-full w-full\"\/><figcaption class=\"m-0 mt-1 p-0 text-3xs text-gray-525 table-caption caption-bottom\">The Orfali Bros restaurant in Dubai has seen a drop in international visitors and reservations with the start of the war. <span>PHOTO: ORFALI BROS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Catering to the local community rather than tourists helped Dubai-based Singaporean chef Reif Othman weather the current crisis, said the restaurateur with nine outlets in the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Apart from a seasonal low during Ramadan and the initial impact of the war, business has been \u201cso far so good\u201d, he said. \u201cThe local neighbourhood is my target audience, so I\u2019m not reliant on tourists. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cWe continued doing home deliveries even after Covid, so this helps us a lot, plus we do home catering as well, for those who don\u2019t want to go out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Mohamed Orfali of Orfali Bros, a well-known name in the Dubai food scene, said: \u201cWe saw a drop in international visitors, which impacted reservations, especially for our restaurants which are booked well in advance. But we were fortunate to be supported by a loyal local community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Overall, the members of the tight-knit restaurant community have been supportive of each other, Orfali added, and \u201cconcepts with a strong local following and community connection remain stable\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"whitespace-normal mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-inline-image-component\">\n<figure class=\"table w-full\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/businesstimes\/d410b33d3744f8bf341285fa998f2f8c95946cb2aa4adcb277e8ea3d3a14bb87\" alt=\"\" height=\"760\" width=\"1140\" class=\"block max-w-full w-full\"\/><figcaption class=\"m-0 mt-1 p-0 text-3xs text-gray-525 table-caption caption-bottom\">Gregoire Berger&#8217;s new restaurant Kraken in Dubai. <span>PHOTO: KRAKEN<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The sentiment was echoed by Dubai veteran Gregoire Berger, who opened his first independent restaurant Kraken in 2025. Business has been slowly picking up, but the sudden drop was expected. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Even so, \u201cthere are many initiatives for chefs and industry professionals to support each other\u201d, he said. His team has since been hard at work developing \u201cnew offers, deliveries and marketing strategies to make sure our dining room is filled\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The outlook remains unclear, said Loh Lik Peng of Unlisted Collection in Singapore. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cThere\u2019s no clear pattern \u2013 it\u2019s just choppy and volatile.
