If you\u2019ve been telling yourself to just wait a bit longer before picking up a PlayStation 5, this might be the point where that plan starts to fall apart.<\/p>\n
Sony is bumping up PS5 prices again and this round of increases has been confirmed for the US and several major markets including parts of Europe and Japan, with changes kicking in from 2 April<\/b>. It\u2019s not a small adjustment either \u2013 according to Sony\u2019s announcement, we\u2019re looking at roughly a US$100 increase across the board. The standard PS5 now sits at US$649.99<\/b>, the Digital Edition at US$599.99<\/b>, and the PS5 Pro\u2026well, that one\u2019s now flirting with US$899.99<\/b>.<\/p>\n
That increase for the PS5 Pro is probably the one that sticks, because at that price you\u2019re starting to think about what kind of PC components you could piece together.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s odd is that this is happening at all. Consoles are supposed to get cheaper over time. From the PlayStation One to the PS4, that\u2019s always been the business case \u2013 launch high, then slowly ease down as the price for components drop. The PS5 is however, doing quiote the opposite, and this isn\u2019t even the first time. Sony already nudged prices up not too long ago, and now here we are again.<\/p>\n
The explanation isn\u2019t surprising, though. Memory prices are climbing, and a lot of that has to do with AI. Big tech firms are hoovering up DRAM and storage for data centres, and that naturally pushes costs up everywhere else. Throw in the usual supply chain headaches, and suddenly making consoles isn\u2019t as cheap as it used to be.<\/p>\n
Still, it does put Sony in a slightly awkward spot. The PS5 isn\u2019t new anymore. We\u2019re well past the early adopter phase, and this is usually when momentum either holds steady or starts tapering off. Sony\u2019s own recent numbers already hint at softer sales, so raising prices now feels like a bit of a gamble.<\/p>\n
Closer to home, it\u2019s not clear yet if Southeast Asia \u2013 including Singapore \u2013 will see the same adjustments. But you can bet this will have an impact here sooner than later.
