According to her Instagram post, she had been invited by her former supervisor to deliver a guest lecture on her PhD thesis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She described her scholarly work as examining the intellectual history of decolonisation and anti-imperialism.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">After failing to pass through the automated gate, she was told she was not allowed to enter the country and would be deported.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">ICA\u2019s purported notice of refusal of entry, which she posted online, stated she was \u201cineligible for the issue of a pass under current immigration policies\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In a response on Friday evening to MHA\u2019s statement earlier that day on refusing her entry to Singapore, Ms Fadiah had said the MHA\u2019s statement was \u201cmalicious, false and defamatory\u201d.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She added that Singapore\u2019s MHA had \u201cprovided no evidence to support these allegations\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>At NUS, she received two graduate teaching awards and presented her scholarly work at academic institutions within Southeast Asia and beyond, as well as on various public platforms, Ms Fadiah added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>In the final year of her candidature, she was awarded a teaching fellowship by the College of Humanities and Sciences, NUS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>\u201cThe only plausible explanation for these acts of repression is that I, as a scholar of Southeast Asian Studies whose work examines the intellectual history of decolonisation and anti-imperialism in Malaya\/Malaysia, Singapore, and the broader region, am being targeted for my role and responsibility as a scholar,\u201d she stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>MALAYSIAN PARTY IN SPOTLIGHT PREVIOUSLY<\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>In a speech\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/singapore\/ge2025-workers-party-noor-deros-shanmugam-pas-5400046\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>on the politicisation of race and religion<\/span><\/a><span> in Parliament last October, Mr Shanmugam said\u00a0Malaysian politicians from\u00a0the Islamist Parti Islam Se-Malaysia\u2019s (PAS) had urged Singaporeans to vote along racial and religious lines in the country\u2019s general election last May.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>In the lead-up to the May 3 polls, MHA and the Elections Department said the authorities had identified a number of foreigners trying to influence the election, and blocked access to several Facebook posts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>The posts were by PAS national treasurer Iskandar Abdul Samad and its Selangor Youth chief Mohamed Sukri Omar, Mr Shanmugam said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>The posts had expressed support for Singapore\u2019s Workers\u2019 Party candidate Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap, who contested in Tampines group representation constituency, and claimed the ruling People\u2019s Action Party\u2019s Malay-Muslim Members of Parliament could not be trusted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>In response to Mr Shanmugam\u2019s remarks, PAS rejected what it called an attempt to cast it as \u201ca\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/singapore\/malaysia-islamist-pas-race-religion-shanmugam-foreign-influence-politics-ge2025-5403091\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>convenient bogeyman<\/span><\/a><span> to advance domestic political agendas in Singapore\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>\u201cDo not manufacture enemies where none exist,\u201d said PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan in a statement on Oct 15.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>The next day, MHA quoted extracts of Mr Iskandar\u2019s comments and noted\u00a0Mr Mohamed Sukri had re-posted a social media post which stated that PAP\u2019s Malay-Muslim Members of Parliament could not be trusted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>\u201cThis was a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/singapore\/mha-singapore-malaysia-islamist-party-pas-general-election-votes-k-shanmugam-5407011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>serious interference in Singapore\u2019s elections<\/span><\/a><span>,\u201d MHA said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>\u201cWe recognise that foreigners may have views and are entitled to comment on Singapore\u2019s policies and politics.
