{"id":39834,"date":"2026-03-28T07:26:38","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T23:26:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=39834"},"modified":"2026-03-28T07:26:38","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T23:26:38","slug":"lower-fertility-mental-health-issues-5-ways-hotter-weather-will-affect-singapore-and-how-to-cope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=39834","title":{"rendered":"Lower fertility, mental health issues: 5 ways hotter weather will affect Singapore and how to cope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/environment\/hotter-weather-on-the-cards-el-nino-could-be-felt-in-singapore-from-july-says-met-service?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">El Nino on the horizon<\/span><\/a> and warmer weather on the cards for Singapore, there is an increasing need for people here to learn how to build their resilience against rising temperatures. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This is important because heat goes beyond mere thermal discomfort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Multiple studies have shown that rising temperatures can affect people in a myriad of ways. The Straits Times highlights some of these impacts, and how people can beat the heat. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">People may become more irritable as temperatures rise, and have difficulty paying attention and processing information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">They may be more susceptible to mental health issues such as depression, and suffer from impaired decision-making, lower productivity and poor quality of sleep, said senior economist Dr Ken C. Shawa at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/heat-stress-is-a-silent-killer-how-heat-can-affect-mental-health-in-workers?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">forum in 2025 on heat health in South-east Asia<\/span><\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/east-asia\/high-temperatures-may-worsen-mental-health-conditions-korean-study?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">a South Korean study<\/span><\/a> found that for every 1 deg C increase in average annual temperatures, respondents were 13 per cent more likely to report having depressive symptoms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Being exposed to extreme heat can be detrimental to one\u2019s physical health, with vulnerable groups being more susceptible to heat illnesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Common side effects of heat include headaches, heat cramps, sunburn and heat rash. Severe injuries include heat exhaustion and heat stroke.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The elderly, and patients with chronic conditions such as thyroid disorders, are at greater risk of fainting or heat injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Scientists from Singapore and Britain had found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/extreme-heat-linked-to-diabetes-in-pregnant-women-thyroid-disorders-study?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">patients with endocrine disorders such as diabetes and hyperthyroidism<\/span><\/a> are at a greater risk of heat illnesses as their bodies have difficulty regulating heat<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/environment\/a-1-deg-c-rise-in-daily-temperatures-more-than-doubles-the-danger-for-outdoor-workers-spore-study?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">recently published Singapore study<\/span><\/a> also found that every 1 deg C rise in daily average temperature more than doubles an outdoor worker\u2019s risk of heat stroke. If this temperature increase is sustained over three days, the worker\u2019s odds of having a heat injury nearly quadruples.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">High heat stress affects workers\u2019 productivity and decision-making skills, which can lead to a higher risk of injury. Students may also experience poorer performance in warmer environments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/rising-heat-how-scorching-weather-affects-the-body-and-what-you-can-do-about-it?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">Project HeatSafe, a research project based at the National University of Singapore (NUS)<\/span><\/a> forecast that in 2035, rising temperatures could cause a $2.22 billion loss in labour productivity in Singapore across the construction, services, manufacturing and agriculture sectors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The cognitive performance of secondary school students also decreased when they experienced warmer, stiller environments, according to a local study supported by the Ministry of National Development<!-- -->.<!-- --> <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Exposure to extreme heat can negatively affect fertility and birth outcomes, at a time when Singapore is facing low fertility rates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/spores-total-fertility-rate-sinks-to-new-low-of-0-87?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">The Republic\u2019s total fertility rate hit a new low of 0.87 in 2025<\/span><\/a>, deepening concerns over its potential impact on the country\u2019s society and economy. Total fertility rate refers to the average number of babies each woman would have during her reproductive years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Research by Project HeatSafe showed that<b><i> <\/i><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/extreme-heat-affects-men-s-fertility-and-birth-outcomes-nus-study?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">men face a higher risk of low sperm count, concentration and motility<\/span><\/a> when exposed to periods of extreme heat. Such periods are defined as when a day\u2019s average temperature exceeds 29.8 deg C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Another study by NUS also found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/extreme-heat-linked-to-diabetes-in-pregnant-women-thyroid-disorders-study?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">pregnant women may also face a higher risk of complications<\/span><\/a> such as premature birth, low birth weight, stillbirth and gestational diabetes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Extreme heat can also impact pets and wildlife.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/environment\/Warming-climate-could-drive-more-wildlife-in-Spore-to-urban-areas-247870?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">rising temperatures may drive native wildlife to urban areas<\/span><\/a> and cause deaths if they lack access to water and shade, ST reported in 2022. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Bouts of dry weather then were suspected to have caused critically endangered Raffles\u2019 banded langurs to venture into urban areas in search of water sources like <!-- -->canals, instead of <!-- -->their usual sources such as streams and treeholes. <!-- -->This could result in them getting<!-- --> trapped in drains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Birds and other animals may also die of heat stress in warming urban environments, animal experts told ST.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In Singapore, coral spawning \u2013 a mass reproduction exercise that takes place once a year \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/environment\/coral-spawning-muted-in-spore-after-2024-mass-bleaching-event?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">was observed to be more muted in 2025<\/span><\/a>, after experiencing one of the hottest years on record the year before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Meanwhile, an international study also found that extreme heat due to climate change was a contributing factor behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/climate-heat-extremes-driving-tropical-bird-decline-study?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">a 25 per cent to 38 per cent reduction in tropical bird populations<\/span><\/a> between 1950 and 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Besides impacting wildlife, high temperatures can also amplify the risk of hazards such as air pollution, infectious diseases and drought.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-list-container\" data-testid=\"bulleted-article-list-test-id\">\n<ul class=\"pl-22 list-disc article-list-wrapper\">\n<li class=\"article-list-item list-item\" data-testid=\"bulleted-article-list-item-test-id\">\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Acclimatise to heat by participating in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/from-aerobics-to-hot-yoga-ways-to-raise-tolerance-for-warmer-weather?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">aerobic exercises such as running and cycling<\/span><\/a>, which can help lower the core body temperature and trigger earlier and faster sweating to help the skin cool down.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"article-list-item list-item\" data-testid=\"bulleted-article-list-item-test-id\">\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Check heat stress levels through the National Environment Agency\u2019s myENV app before going outdoors. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-list-container\" data-testid=\"bulleted-article-list-test-id\">\n<ul class=\"pl-22 list-disc article-list-wrapper\">\n<li class=\"article-list-item list-item\" data-testid=\"bulleted-article-list-item-test-id\">\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">A heatwave response plan will kick in before a heatwave is declared. This happens when the highest daily temperature over three consecutive days is at least 35 deg C, with the mean temperature each day being at least 29 deg C.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"article-list-item list-item\" data-testid=\"bulleted-article-list-item-test-id\">\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">As part of the plan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/cooling-spaces-suspension-of-outdoor-activities-among-measures-in-new-national-heat-response-plan?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">cooling spaces will be set up islandwide<\/span><\/a> in locations such as community centres, residents\u2019 committee rooms and indoor sports halls with air-conditioning.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"article-list-item list-item\" data-testid=\"bulleted-article-list-item-test-id\">\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">There are plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/housing\/heat-reflective-paint-initiative-to-be-rolled-out-to-all-hdb-estates-by-2030?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">coat all HDB blocks with heat-reflective paint by 2030<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX) has been inventing new tools and gear to protect police officers, firefighters and other officers of the Home Team from heat stress.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-list-container\" data-testid=\"bulleted-article-list-test-id\">\n<ul class=\"pl-22 list-disc article-list-wrapper\">\n<li class=\"article-list-item list-item\" data-testid=\"bulleted-article-list-item-test-id\">\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Police officers may soon get a cooling vest with a ventilation system that uses four fans and an air mesh plate.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"article-list-item list-item\" data-testid=\"bulleted-article-list-item-test-id\">\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The vest is able to reduce officers\u2019 body temperature by around 2 deg C.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"article-list-item list-item\" data-testid=\"bulleted-article-list-item-test-id\">\n<p
