Kizuna AI is not human, but a two-dimensional, anime-style avatar \u2013 known as a \u201cvirtual YouTuber,\u201d or <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">VTuber<\/span> \u2013 whose movements and voice are provided by real people behind the scenes.<\/div>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Debuting in 2016 under digital entertainment firm Activ8, Kizuna AI is often credited with popularising the term VTuber and paving the way for virtual entertainers with massive live-stream audiences.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Voice actor Nozomi Kasuga revealed in 2020 that she was the voice behind Kizuna AI \u2013 a rare move, as VTubers typically keep their real identities hidden. For some, a VTuber\u2019s virtual nature is part of the appeal, making them more relatable and accessible than human idols.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Kizuna AI is adored by more than 3 million YouTube followers today, maintaining her popularity even after going on hiatus in 2022. She resumed activities in February 2025.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cI love Ai-chan so much, and I was really sad not being able to see her during her hiatus,\u201d says Guo Zhaoheng, 26, who went from China to see Kizuna AI\u2019s comeback show in Tokyo in September. \u201cI even wore this outfit that she loves.
