OpenAI <\/b>has announced that it is shutting down<\/b> its Sora <\/b>AI video generator. It\u2019s a sudden development, especially considering the attention it got \u2013 positive and negative \u2013 when its standalone app was released just six months ago. But while unexpected, it doesn\u2019t mean the company is ending its GenAI video efforts for good.<\/p>\n
According to the Wall Street Journal, which originally broke the story, Sora\u2019s closure comes as part of OpenAI\u2019s efforts to restructure its AI offerings into a single, centralised service \u2013 specifically, a \u201csuperapp\u201d that unifies ChatGPT, its Atlas web browser, and Codex coding app. Developer versions of Sora have also been discontinued.<\/p>\n
In addition, OpenAI is also reportedly planning to focus on other long-term projects, including robotics, as well company\u2019s new \u2018Spud\u2019 AI model, the latter of which is ready to be released in a few weeks; that\u2019s according to an internal memo from CEO Sam Altman obtained by The Information. All this comes in the face of increased competition from other AI companies, including Anthropic and its Claude LLMs.<\/p>\n
For many of us who only remember the hype that Sora\u2019s release got, this announcement may look like it came out of left field. However, there have been signs that the platform was faltering in popularity, specifically its app. <\/p>\n
Reporting by TechCrunch showed that downloads for the Sora app had declined by 32 percent month-over-month last December, with the trend continuing into January. Importantly, this trend also extended to in-app spending, from US$540,000 in December 2025 to US$367,000 in January 2026. <\/p>\n
And while Sora\u2019s closure appears to line up with OpenAI\u2019s consolidation of its AI services, it\u2019s a blindside to Sora\u2019s users, especially as there was no buildup to the announcement. It also appeared to have caught some of the company\u2019s partners off guard, chief among them Disney. The entertainment giant had recently inked a US$1 billion deal with OpenAI, licensing the likeness of characters from Disney-owned franchises to allow users to generate videos with them. With Sora going away, that deal appears to have fallen through.<\/p>\n
However, beyond that, this is also a sign of just how unsustainable OpenAI\u2019s operations are. Last year, news reports pegged OpenAI\u2019s total cash burn projections through 2029 to be at $115 billion. While offering services like ChatGPT, Sora and others for free do help to draw users in, there\u2019s no clear and easy path to monetising that audience. <\/p>\n
There were estimates that OpenAI was burning through as much as $15 million per day purely on Sora and AI video generation, and with the company wanting to undergo an IPO soon, it\u2019s imperative they tighten up their operations to make their financials look better to draw more investment. <\/p>\n
OpenAI has most likely felt the pain of perpetually rising costs and the pressure of other, more successful competitors like Anthropic\u2019s Claude model, and decided to close some services in order to focus on other priorities that might be more successful in the enterprise space.<\/p>\n
Robotics is one such priority, with the Sora team now being transitioned to focus on research in that area. OpenAI\u2019s Codex coding tool is also another bright spot for the company, with a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate (annual revenue projections based on short term performance data).<\/p>\n
At the time of publication, Sora has already been removed from the App Store. What a fall from grace for the app that hit 1 million downloads in under five days when it launched.<\/p>\n
