If you ask Hongkongers if they like Thai food, many will say they do; ask them if they know ThongSmith, and chances are most of them will say yes.<\/p>\n

The Bangkok-based noodle chain opened in 2018 and has since expanded to more than 25 locations in the Thai capital. It made a name for itself by honing in on humble boat noodles, with a slow-simmered broth and adding premium toppings such as Australian Wagyu beef and Kurobuta pork.<\/p>\n

Now, in its eighth year, it has picked Hong Kong as its first overseas location.<\/p>\n

On March 18, ThongSmith landed in Wan Chai, where long queues of Thai food enthusiasts formed on the first day. According to Instagram users, there was already a 45-minute wait when the restaurant opened 30 minutes before noon.<\/p>\n

Opening in Hong Kong was a deliberate choice, one that was a long time coming, co-founder Atchara \u201cPla\u201d Burarak says.<\/p>\n

\u201cHong Kong customers have been coming to support ThongSmith since the days when we had only one store,\u201d she says, referring to the restaurant\u2019s first branch in Central Embassy, a luxury shopping centre in Bangkok. \u201cI get contacted by many Hongkongers asking to franchise the restaurant.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
