All seven members log onto a live stream, broadcast from a beach. A few years ago, it would have been a common image. But since the K-pop boy band BTS<\/span> pressed pause on their full-band duties for nearly four years, it is revelatory.<\/div>\n

That is the scene at the start of BTS: The Return<\/em>, a new Netflix documentary directed by Bao Nguyen (The Stringer<\/em>, The Greatest Night in Pop<\/em>) and produced by This Machine (Martha<\/em>, Karol G<\/em>) and Hybe, the South Korean entertainment company behind BTS.<\/p>\n

The mostly Korean-language film offers an intimate look at BTS\u2019 latest album, Arirang<\/em>, released on March 20. It also follows the seven-member group \u2013 RM, Jin<\/span>, Jimin, V, Suga, Jung Kook and J-Hope \u2013 as they reacclimate to life in the fast lane. The documentary will premiere on Netflix on March 27.<\/div>\n
Arirang<\/em> is the band\u2019s first full-length release since all seven members completed their mandatory military service<\/span>. In South Korea, all able-bodied men aged 18 to 28 are required by law to perform 18 to 21 months of military service.<\/div>\n

In the first minute of the documentary, while the band films their live video on the beach, RM mentions that he \u201clearned to hustle\u201d in the military. Then it cuts to footage of the guys getting their heads shaved and wearing their uniforms \u2013 and quickly thereafter rejoining the band.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
