{"id":39132,"date":"2026-03-25T13:41:38","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T05:41:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=39132"},"modified":"2026-03-25T13:41:38","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T05:41:38","slug":"a-bomb-survivor-shares-testimony-with-rgs-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=39132","title":{"rendered":"A-bomb survivor shares testimony with RGS students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 Growing up, Ms Masako Wada heard horrific stories from her mother about the aftermath of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/east-asia\/nagasaki-mayor-warns-of-nuclear-war-as-city-marks-80-years-since-a-bomb?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki<\/span><\/a> city in south-western Japan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cMy mother saw rows of burnt and injured people climbing over the mountains like chocolate-covered ants to get help,\u201d recalled Ms Wada. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Living about 2.9km from the bomb\u2019s epicentre in Nagasaki, she was a year and 10 months old when the bomb was dropped on Aug 9, 1945. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Her family was not directly affected as their home was on a mountain but from their vantage point, her mother could see the damage, and smell the death and destruction.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"landscape inline-media-wrapper\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/38e50dde15498538e848c5a20aec80e8a1adc8df80e66a07482ec7218285e9b4?w=480\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 720px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/38e50dde15498538e848c5a20aec80e8a1adc8df80e66a07482ec7218285e9b4?w=720\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 721px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/38e50dde15498538e848c5a20aec80e8a1adc8df80e66a07482ec7218285e9b4?w=900\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/38e50dde15498538e848c5a20aec80e8a1adc8df80e66a07482ec7218285e9b4\" alt=\"Ms Masako Wada, an atomic bomb survivor, sharing anecdotes of death and destruction during a 15-hour stop in Singapore on March 21.\" class=\"aspect-landscape flex items-start shrink-0 object-cover landscape article-landscape mobile:w-auto tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/div><figcaption class=\"mobile:mx-16 tablet:mx-00 flex flex-col gap-08 py-16 desktop:pb-24\">\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-secondary\" data-testid=\"inline-media-caption-test-id\">Ms Masako Wada, an atomic bomb survivor, sharing anecdotes of death and destruction during a 15-hour stop in Singapore on March 21.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-placeholder\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\">ST PHOTO: GIN TAY<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cShe used to say that the smell of (atomic bomb victims) burning like human garbage would come back to her every August,\u201d Ms Wada said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">These anecdotes were part of the testimony the 82-year-old shared with students from Raffles Girls\u2019 School during their visit aboard the MV Pacific World \u2013 the ship of Japan-based non-governmental organisation Peace Boat \u2013 during its 15-hour stop in Singapore on March 21.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Nagasaki was levelled when the United States dropped a 4,536kg plutonium-239 bomb, nicknamed \u201cFat Man\u201d, instantly killing some 27,000 of the estimated 200,000 residents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">By the end of 1945, the number of people who died from acute radiation exposure had reached about 70,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Nagasaki\u2019s destruction came three days after a US uranium-235 bomb destroyed Hiroshima. Japan surrendered on Aug 15, ending World War II. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI fear that the risk of nuclear weapons being used again is increasing with the conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza and now Iran,\u201d Ms Wada said in Japanese.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">As a hibakusha or younger atomic bomb survivor, she felt the urgency to spread the message on the dangers of nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe average age of hibakusha is 86 years old. Guest speakers, such as Ms Wada, are invited aboard as part of these educational programmes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">RGS\u2019 visit to the MV Pacific World was organised by the Parents for Raffles Girls\u2019 School (PRGS) association. In total, 19 students, accompanied by one parent each, visited the ship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Besides meeting Ms Wada, the students toured the ship, and viewed an adapted version of the Nobel Peace Prize exhibition, A Message to Humanity. It spotlights Nihon Hidankyo, a group of Japanese atomic bomb survivors lobbying for the abolition of nuclear weapons, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ms Wada is assistant secretary-general of Nihon Hidankyo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ms Michelle Yong, a representative from the PRGS executive committee, said: \u201cWe hope that learning about the mission of Peace Boat and Ms Wada will inspire the students to always have a heart for humanity and to use the opportunities given to them for good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Secondary 2 student Sera Tan Jia Yi said Ms Wada\u2019s sharing opened her eyes to the long-term effects of the nuclear bomb, such as the discrimination that hibakusha faced in areas like marriage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cIn class, we\u2019ve learnt that the dropping of the atomic bombs ended World War II. I never really thought about how its victims suffered before this\u2026It\u2019s a rare and unique experience that has given me a new perspective,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For Secondary 3 student Shanah Lucy Das, the experience deepened her appreciation of the peace she enjoys today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cIt really resonated with me. Listening to (Ms Wada) describe the dehumanising ways in which the victims suffered, it was really heartbreaking,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cIt\u2019s important for us to learn and share this story not only to ensure that a piece of history is not lost, but so that the lessons of the past won\u2019t be forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">When asked what young people can do, Ms Wada said: \u201cEmpathise, rather than sympathise, with us.
