{"id":38687,"date":"2026-03-23T20:39:38","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T12:39:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=38687"},"modified":"2026-03-23T20:39:38","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T12:39:38","slug":"police-in-singapore-investigating-suspect-linked-to-malaysian-car-cloning-crime-syndicate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=38687","title":{"rendered":"Police in Singapore investigating suspect linked to Malaysian car cloning crime syndicate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013<!-- --> A probe into a car cloning outfit operating in Malaysia has extended to Singapore, with police investigating the role a Malaysian man allegedly played in car theft cases here. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On March 23, Mohd Mazuan Abdullah took officers from the Singapore Police Force (SPF) through a crime scene in Sungei Kadut Street 4, where police<!-- --> questioned him<!-- --> about a deregistered car which was stolen from outside a car scrapyard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The 39-year-old, who had hand and leg restraints, spoke to investigating officers outside the scrapyard at about 3pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mazuan is already facing a charge involving the theft of a separate deregistered BMW worth $1,000. The car was stolen in <!-- -->November 2025 from <!-- -->Sungei Kadut Street 1, where another scrapyard is located.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The syndicate is said to be involved in selling stolen cars which carried cloned details of legally registered vehicles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">According to Malaysian media reports, syndicate members altered the chassis and engine numbers of the stolen cars to match legitimate vehicles, and forged documents, including registration cards, before selling the vehicles on the used-car market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) busted the syndicate and arrested 10 men and two women between March 12 and 15.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"landscape inline-media-wrapper\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/a7ad23c41fd068e05a86aea3b4573d72ac55f1e1eeb9f3f4153272bbae131a43?w=480\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 720px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/a7ad23c41fd068e05a86aea3b4573d72ac55f1e1eeb9f3f4153272bbae131a43?w=720\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 721px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/a7ad23c41fd068e05a86aea3b4573d72ac55f1e1eeb9f3f4153272bbae131a43?w=900\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/a7ad23c41fd068e05a86aea3b4573d72ac55f1e1eeb9f3f4153272bbae131a43\" alt=\"\" class=\"aspect-landscape flex items-start shrink-0 object-cover landscape article-landscape mobile:w-auto tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/div><figcaption class=\"mobile:mx-16 tablet:mx-00 flex flex-col gap-08 py-16 desktop:pb-24\">\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-secondary\" data-testid=\"inline-media-caption-test-id\">The syndicate is said to be involved in selling stolen cars which carried cloned details of legally registered vehicles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-placeholder\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\">ST PHOTO: GIN TAY<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">They also seized 12 vehicles worth about RM1.1 million ($359,000), including four said to have been stolen in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Malaysian police handed over Mazuan, who was wanted in Singapore in connection with vehicle theft cases here, to SPF officers on March 16.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The investigation here comes amid reports that showed a surge in the number of hit-and-run accidents and crime cases involving deregistered vehicles in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Government figures showed that there were 245 cases reported in 2025, compared with 75 cases the previous year.
