{"id":37839,"date":"2026-03-20T13:24:37","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T05:24:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=37839"},"modified":"2026-03-20T13:24:37","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T05:24:37","slug":"how-a-hong-kong-fish-ball-maker-from-kowloon-walled-city-became-a-thriving-family-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=37839","title":{"rendered":"How a Hong Kong fish ball maker from Kowloon Walled City became a thriving family business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Kowloon Walled City, with its triad gangs and lawless reputation, remains a symbol of Hong Kong\u2019s underbelly more than three decades after it was demolished in 1994.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">What many forget, however, is that it was also home to tens of thousands of ordinary residents who lived ordinary lives trying to make ends meet.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Ha Ming Kee, a Chiu Chow-style <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">fish ball<\/span> noodle restaurant and manufacturer, was founded decades ago by Roger Ha\u2019s parents, Ha Fan-ming and Chan So-hing, in the narrow alleyways of <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Kowloon Walled City<\/span>.<\/div>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cI have memories of my mother cleaning the fish by the pump on the street,\u201d Roger Ha says. \u201cThere was no running water in the buildings, and the pump was our only water supply.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-inline-container e1a5rv550 css-1llrc1m e1yqhwb40\" data-qa=\"Component-renderMap-StyledDiv\">\n<div class=\"image-inline caption e1fvabeq0 css-19sk4h4 ea9pn0s0\" data-qa=\"Component-Container\">\n<figure class=\"image-inline caption ea9pn0s1 css-1qeofuq e1gf69pb0\" data-qa=\"ArticleImage-ArticleImageContainer\">\n<div data-qa=\"ArticleImage-handleRenderImage-ImageContainer\" class=\"css-0 e1gf69pb3\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Pedestrians walk on a street outside the Kowloon Walled City before its demolition in 1994. Photo: courtesy of Roger Ha<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Chiu Chow fish balls date back to the tail end of <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">the Qing dynasty<\/span> (1644-1911) in Chaozhou \u2013 or Chiu Chow, as it is called in Cantonese \u2013 in the east of China\u2019s Guangdong province.
