{"id":37809,"date":"2026-03-20T11:11:34","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T03:11:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=37809"},"modified":"2026-03-20T11:11:34","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T03:11:34","slug":"less-than-1-of-food-in-singapore-comes-from-middle-east-but-prices-could-still-go-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=37809","title":{"rendered":"Less than 1% of food in Singapore comes from Middle East, but prices could still go up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013<!-- --> Less than 1 per cent of Singapore\u2019s food supply comes from the Middle East, with supplies from major ports in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/middle-east\/how-the-iran-war-could-shake-up-global-shipping-routes?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">the Strait of Hormuz<\/span><\/a> accounting for less than 0.5 per cent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But the prices of food here could still go up because of the war, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu said on March 18. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cQuantity is not a problem. But there is a feed-through mechanism, through logistics,\u201d she added in an interview with The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The imports from the Middle East include oranges from Egypt, lemons from Turkey, and dates from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Iran\u2019s continued blockage of the Strait of Hormuz \u2013 a major global shipping route \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/middle-east\/strait-of-hormuz-disruptions-will-hit-food-prices-as-well-as-oil-un-warns?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">could affect shipments of fertiliser<\/span><\/a>, which the Middle East is a major producer of, she said. The disruptions could lead to higher costs of fertiliser and have a trickle-down effect on agriculture and farming of livestock<!-- --> like chicken and cattle<!-- -->, she added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Hawkers may also have to pay more for cooking gas due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/business\/economy\/singapore-consumers-in-for-higher-petrol-electricity-prices-as-oil-spikes-past-us100?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">higher oil and gas prices<\/span><\/a>. \u201cSo these all have potential impacts on food prices,\u201d said Ms Fu. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">At least one farmer in Singapore, who produces a range of fish such as red snapper and barramundi, told ST that he is considering raising prices for his fish, although he will do so only as a last resort. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Malcolm Ong, founder of The Fish Farmer, said he imports most of the farm\u2019s fish feed from Malaysia and Vietnam, so he anticipates that higher fuel costs could increase his production costs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cAt the moment we haven\u2019t increased prices, but we are coming to a point where we cannot keep absorbing this cost increase because the fuel cost is not a small jump<!-- -->, it\u2019s a big one<!-- -->,\u201d he said<!-- -->, noting that transport and logistics costs are already impacted<!-- -->. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ms Fu said climate change impacts, such as water scarcity or extreme weather affecting crop yields, could also affect people here in a similar way. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">That is why it is important for Singapore to build up its resilience against such disruptions. This will involve insulating itself from risks as much as possible, and recovering quickly when it is hit, she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe can never totally insulate ourselves because we are dependent on imports,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singapore imports more than 90 per cent of its food. \u201cSo as much as possible, either you diversify, stockpile, or you have some other ways that can reduce the reliance on the single market or increase your leverage in ensuring that there\u2019s actually supply coming to you,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">During the interview, Ms Fu touched on why her ministry had made climate adaptation \u2013 or efforts to protect people and places from climate change impacts \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/what-you-need-to-know-about-singapores-year-of-climate-adaptation-in-2026?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">a national priority for 2026<\/span><\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment <!-- -->(MSE) <!-- -->has designated 2026 as the Year of Climate Adaptation and announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/spore-to-focus-on-adaptation-as-climate-impacts-grow-emitters-backslide-on-commitments-grace-fu?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">suite of new initiatives<\/span><\/a> to address threats ranging from unbearable heat to rising seas during the debate on its budget on March 3. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">These initiatives include girding coastlines against rising sea levels and strengthening Singapore\u2019s food security. More funds will also be invested in research that will deepen understanding of how heat affects people and facilitate the development of novel cooling solutions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The total expenditure of MSE for financial year (FY) 2026 is projected to be $3.69 billion, down from the $4.21 billion in FY2025.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Government hopes to engage stakeholders on climate adaptation measures: Grace Fu\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mmi7cB93aEU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ms Fu said that increasing fragmentation in climate politics has spurred the need to focus on adaptation now. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She cited the US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/united-states\/trump-to-withdraw-from-paris-climate-agreement-white-house-says?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">pulling out of the Paris Agreement<\/span><\/a>. The pact was signed by nearly 200 countries in 2015 to limit global warming to 1.5 deg C above pre-industrial levels, to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The absence of big countries like the US in climate negotiations has made such talks more difficult, she added. \u201cThe US is not just passively absent, it\u2019s actually actively taking steps to stall global climate action,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThey see this as a geopolitical contestation&#8230; And they see that the winner of this is the green countries with green technology, green solutions, and because they are not in there, they see that this is not a game that they can win, they don\u2019t want their opponents to win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But Singapore can still work on adaptation efforts to protect itself better from climate change impacts. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cNobody can quite argue with why countries should take steps to protect themselves from the impact of climate change,\u201d said Ms Fu. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singapore is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/environment\/with-climate-risks-outpacing-global-response-cop30-must-deliver-concrete-results-grace-fu?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">preparing its first national adaptation plan<\/span><\/a> \u2013 a blueprint that will chart measures to guard the country against climate threats. <!-- -->All the countries that are party to the Paris Agreement are expected to submit these plans to the UN.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singapore\u2019s plan is slated to be published in 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ms Fu outlined key areas of the plan, including infrastructure, food and water, public health, and socio-economic issues. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Each focus area will highlight measures from different agencies, she added. \u201cPart of this national adaptation plan is also for us to coordinate within the Government, because for each of the government agencies, we do have some elements of adaptation,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For example, on infrastructure, stakeholders can think about how to build for a warmer world with rising temperatures and rising sea levels. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">More research can also be done on how heat affects health, especially for the elderly. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">When it comes to socio-economic issues, how climate change would affect a country\u2019s economic resilience and equality also needs to be studied, Ms Fu said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She added: \u201cThe whole purpose of this is to also make people aware that there is actually a need for adaptation, and what adaptation is all about.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ms Fu said she hopes that individuals can become part of the national adaptation plan by understanding how they can take care of themselves and their communities. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For example, during periods of haze, individuals can follow advisories and protect themselves while looking out for the more vulnerable, such as the elderly, she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On hot days, individuals can also dress more suitably or think of ways to make their own homes more comfortable to tackle the heat, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Businesses, too, must also take some responsibility. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Part of the suite of Singapore\u2019s adaptation initiatives is the passing of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/land-owners-occupants-of-coastal-areas-must-protect-their-properties-against-rising-seas-under?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">a new coastal protection law<\/span><\/a>.
