{"id":37555,"date":"2026-03-19T12:38:36","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T04:38:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=37555"},"modified":"2026-03-19T12:38:36","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T04:38:36","slug":"govt-ready-to-roll-out-more-support-measures-should-need-arise-amid-middle-east-situation-pm-wong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=37555","title":{"rendered":"Govt ready to roll out more support measures should need arise amid Middle East situation: PM Wong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">TOKYO \u2013 The Singapore Government is ready to roll out measures beyond what was announced at Budget 2026 should the need arise, following the situation in the Middle East, said Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on March 18. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It has the resources to do so decisively and quickly, but for now, households and businesses will feel the effects of the already-announced measures soon, he said.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">These include utility rebates and various business assistance measures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe want to see these being implemented first,\u201d said PM Wong. \u201cAnd then we will continue monitoring the situation because&#8230; it\u2019s very fluid, and we are looking at all the different possibilities and contingencies that can happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He was speaking to Singapore media during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/spore-japan-upgrade-ties-to-strategic-partnership?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">his three-day official visit to Japan<\/span><\/a> where he and his counterpart Sanae Takaichi announced upgraded ties to a strategic partnership that includes more cooperation in energy and the green transition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Responding to a question on whether more assistance was being considered for Singaporeans in the face of rising energy prices, PM Wong said the current situation is dynamic, given that the US military operation \u2013 originally said to be over in a matter of weeks \u2013 is now in its third week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The US and Israel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/middle-east\/israel-and-us-launch-attack-on-iran-targeting-its-leadership?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">attacked Iran on Feb 28<\/span><\/a>. So a prolonged blockage of the Strait will have significant implications for the global economy, and may tip the global economy into a tailspin, into a downturn, or even a recession,\u201d said PM Wong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cSo these are things that we worry about. We don\u2019t know if it will happen, but we are monitoring very closely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">His remarks come after Minister-in-charge of Energy and Science &amp; Technology Tan See Leng <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/environment\/singapores-energy-is-secure-despite-disruptions-from-middle-east-conflict-tan-see-leng?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">said Singapore\u2019s energy supplies remain secure<\/span><\/a> despite rising oil and gas prices caused by the conflict in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">With global energy prices rising, Singapore\u2019s electricity prices will also likely increase in the months ahead, Dr Tan said as he urged Singaporeans to help offset the increase by conserving energy and using more energy-efficient appliances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This echoed his Facebook post on March 12, where he had also said that the Government stands ready to support households and businesses as necessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On the impact of the situation in Iran beyond prices and the economy, PM Wong said that while the most immediate effect would be on the economy, the broader implications are that international rules and laws continue to be weakened. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It sounds abstract but the weakening of rules, global institutions and longstanding norms should be a significant source of concern for all countries, big and small, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cIt will simply mean we are moving more towards a world where countries will be more inclined to use force to get what they want.
