Details of the Shenzhen museum being built by Pony Ma Huateng<\/span>, co-founder and CEO of internet giant Tencent Holdings, were unveiled on March 17 after months of speculation.<\/div>\n
In a public letter, Pi Li, the former head of art at Hong Kong\u2019s Tai Kwun<\/span>, revealed that he is the founding director and first employee of Rong Museum, a cultural institution with around 4,500 square metres (48,400 sq ft) in total floor area that will open in 2027.<\/div>\n

The name Rong refers to the Chinese character for \u201cblending\u201d or \u201cconvergence\u201d, which Pi says reflects the museum\u2019s intent to function as a platform for promoting inclusive coexistence and global interdependence.<\/p>\n

Rong Museum is going to be one of four towers forming the M80 Campus, a mixed-use property development in Shenzhen\u2019s Houhai district. The philosophy behind the \u201cM\u201d in the name is mutualism, message and memory, while the \u201c80\u201d echoes 1980, the year marking the beginning of the Shenzhen special economic zone, Pi explains in the letter.<\/p>\n

According to Forbes, Ma is the 33rd richest person in the world with a net worth of US$56.7 billion. Most of it is linked to his stake in Tencent.<\/p>\n

Little is known about Ma and his family\u2019s private art collection, though the few public purchases he has made at charity auctions point to an interest in Chinese ink paintings. In 2013, he paid 17 million yuan for a Xu Beihong painting of four horses. Apart from the equine nod in his English first name, Ma\u2019s surname also means horse.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
