{"id":36630,"date":"2026-03-16T12:30:46","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T04:30:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=36630"},"modified":"2026-03-16T12:30:46","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T04:30:46","slug":"language-matters-amid-new-oil-crisis-how-the-word-oil-evolved-from-its-food-based-origins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=36630","title":{"rendered":"Language Matters | Amid new oil crisis, how the word \u2018oil\u2019 evolved from its food-based origins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">As the Middle East conflict escalates, someone says \u201coil\u201d and we picture black rain after oil depot air strikes, or contemplate the largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">But the origins of the word \u201coil\u201d are found in a different region \u2013 the Mediterranean \u2013 and in humans\u2019 fundamental connection with nourishment: it is rooted in Greek \u1f14\u03bb\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">elaion<\/em>, for \u201colive tree\u201d or \u201colive fruit\u201d, from \u1f14\u03bb\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">elaio<\/em> for \u201colive\u201d, from whence oil was derived.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">In a similar vein, the word in Sanskrit \u2013 as well as other South Asian languages \u2013 for \u201coil\u201d, \u0924\u0948\u0932 <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">taila,<\/em> can be traced to the oil of sesame \u0924\u093f\u0932 <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">tila<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">From Greek <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">elaion<\/em> came Latin <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">oleum<\/em> \u201coil, <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">olive oil<\/span>\u201d, which evolved into the Romance languages\u2019 forms, including Old French <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">oile<\/em>\/<em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">uile<\/em> becoming Modern French <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">huile<\/em>, Italian <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">olio,<\/em> Spanish <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">\u00f3leo<\/em>.
