{"id":36455,"date":"2026-03-15T17:35:35","date_gmt":"2026-03-15T09:35:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=36455"},"modified":"2026-03-15T17:35:35","modified_gmt":"2026-03-15T09:35:35","slug":"stray-cat-population-rises-in-sungei-kadut-tuas-despite-nationwide-sterilisation-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=36455","title":{"rendered":"Stray cat population rises in Sungei Kadut, Tuas despite nationwide sterilisation programme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->Cat feeders Sharon Tang and Angela Toh drive twice a week to Sungei Kadut in the north of Singapore, with their car boots filled with canned food and kibble.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">They have been going to the area \u2013 one of Singapore\u2019s oldest industrial estates and home to heavy, timber-related and manufacturing industries \u2013 for the last 10 years to feed stray cats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In recent years, they have noticed the number of cats increasing.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWhen I first started doing this, I was also helping the animal welfare groups trap and sterilise the cats before releasing them back. We managed to keep the population down. She works for her brother in his canteen and a big part of her salary goes into feeding the stray felines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-placeholder\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\">ST PHOTO: ARIFFIN JAMAR<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI guess they miss their families and children, and these cats become \u2018pets\u2019 that they can show affection to,\u201d Ms Toh said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cUnfortunately, many of the young cats they bring back are unsterilised. Once a pair is released, the cycle of reproduction starts.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This, she believed, has rendered the nationwide Trap-Neuter-Rehome\/Release-Manage (TNRM) programme for cats ineffective. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Under the national <!-- -->programme<!-- --> launched in September 2024, close to 3,000 cats had been trapped, sterilised and vaccinated as at January 2026, and returned to the community. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Veterinarians told ST that cats reproduce \u201cincredibly fast\u201d, with the females becoming sexually mature and fertile as young as five to six months old. An unsterilised feline can produce 12 to 18 kittens annually.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Dr Kenneth Tong, founder and head veterinarian of Animal and Avian Veterinary Clinic, said: \u201cEach litter is around two to four kittens, and the mother can get pregnant again a month after giving birth. These are unsterilised cats. We have posted about this on our Facebook page,\u201d said Ms Sim, <!-- -->who<!-- --> is in her 50s. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">TNR<!-- --> Project Singapore is a ground-up initiative focused on trapping, neutering and rehoming stray cats to control their population and prevent abandonment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">After the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/business\/economy\/high-rise-industrial-facilities-agri-tech-park-feature-in-revamped-sungei-kadut?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">master plan for the 500ha area in Sungei Kadut<\/span><\/a> was unveiled in 2020, businesses in the timber, furniture, construction and waste management industries moved out to make way for new growth sectors, such as agri-tech and environmental technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The stray cats in the area were left to fend for themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe factories are already empty. The workers have left, and the cats fully rely on the feeders who drive down every day to feed them. They sometimes go hungry on rainy days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-placeholder\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\">ST PHOTO: ARIFFIN JAMAR<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI believe many cats in the industrial area were actually abandoned, and people choose these places, where there is no CCTV monitoring, to dump their cats. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThese cats<!-- --> <!-- -->sometimes go hungry when feeders cannot make it,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">To help rehome them, Ms Chua turned to Give.Asia, a Singapore-based crowdfunding site for medical, charity, and personal causes across South-east Asia. She has raised more than $30,000 for the sterilisation and rehoming of the Sungei Kadut felines. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Luni Singapore and TNR Project Singapore work with the Government and others like the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Cat Welfare Society to trap, sterilise, vaccinate and manage stray cats in the community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Dr Anna Wong, group director of community animal management at the Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS), told ST that the agency is aware of the population of community cats in the industrial and dormitory areas of Tuas and Sungei Kadut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">AVS is the agency that administers the TNRM programme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cAVS is working with the Ministry of Manpower, JTC and dormitory operators to engage and offer assistance to tenants and workers in these areas through the TNRM programme, with the aim to enhance sterilisation efforts for animal population management and promote responsible animal care,\u201d Dr Wong said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"landscape inline-media-wrapper\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/67fd54d152680c1730ebab5f454b13d189cd01d013c2093deec7a494280fc992?w=480\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 720px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/67fd54d152680c1730ebab5f454b13d189cd01d013c2093deec7a494280fc992?w=720\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 721px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/67fd54d152680c1730ebab5f454b13d189cd01d013c2093deec7a494280fc992?w=900\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/67fd54d152680c1730ebab5f454b13d189cd01d013c2093deec7a494280fc992\" alt=\"\" class=\"aspect-landscape flex items-start shrink-0 object-cover landscape article-landscape mobile:w-auto tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/div><figcaption class=\"mobile:mx-16 tablet:mx-00 flex flex-col gap-08 py-16 desktop:pb-24\">\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-secondary\" data-testid=\"inline-media-caption-test-id\">Education and compulsory snipping and chipping will help not only the community cats but also those who care for them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-placeholder\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\">ST PHOTO: ARIFFIN JAMAR<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cAVS will continue to work closely with our partners to increase our TNRM efforts in areas such as industrial areas and dormitories,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ms Sim said there is no such sterilisation programme in the countries where the foreign workers come from. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThey need to be educated. After all&#8230; these workers are a good source of help for feeding and caring of the community cats,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWhat we (also) need is compulsory sterilisation and microchipping for cats and the message needs to come from the top.
