The flowers probably came from Thailand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Dear tourist: the flowers in the bright-purple lei you received on your Hawaiian holiday almost certainly were not grown in the Aloha State.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The vast majority of those odourless orchids are imported from Thailand, where it is cheaper to grow and string them into the garlands synonymous with Hawaiian culture.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Some Hawaii lawmakers think the US state should be doing more to help the producers of lei made with locally grown flowers. Ideas include labelling requirements that would identify Hawaii-made garlands and a prohibition on state agencies buying imported lei, though some lei sellers worry that such rules would make the garlands too expensive.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">\u201cYou don\u2019t <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">come to Hawaii<\/span> and not at least have a flower or a lei,\u201d says Kuhio Lewis, chief executive of the Hawaiian Council, a non-profit organisation that promotes Native Hawaiian culture and business. \u201cFor us to now be importing is not good.
