The flat blue line, the robotic voice counting down metres, the frantic zoom-in as you realise your exit is coming up, and you have absolutely no idea which lane you need to be in. Google Maps has, for all its dominance, always felt like it was telling you what to do rather than helping you see what is actually ahead. That, Google says, is about to change.

On 12 March 2026, Google announced two major updates to Google Maps: Ask Maps, a Gemini-powered conversational feature that answers complex, real-world questions a standard map could never handle, and Immersive Navigation, a complete redesign of the driving experience that the company calls its biggest navigation upgrade in over a decade. Both features are live in the US from today, with Ask Maps also rolling out simultaneously in India.

Miriam Daniel, VP and GM of Google Maps, sets out the ambition plainly: the goal is to fundamentally change what a map can do by combining the world’s freshest map data with Gemini’s capabilities to turn exploration into a simple conversation and make driving more intuitive than it has ever been.

Ask Maps is the Gemini-powered assistant you can actually use

<picture></picture>Play

Ask Maps is, in essence, a Gemini assistant that lives directly inside Google Maps. Rather than typing a destination or browsing through category tabs, users can now tap a new Ask Maps button and pose genuinely specific questions in natural language.

Google’s own examples give a good sense of the ambition. You can ask, “My phone is dying, where can I charge it without having to wait in a long line for coffee?” or “Is there a public tennis court with lights on that I can play at tonight?” These are not questions a standard map search handles well. They require the app to understand context, availability, and intent at the same time, and then surface relevant results on a customised map so you can visualise your options before you commit.

For trip planning, the feature goes further. Ask something like “I’m headed to the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend and Coral Dunes. Any recommended stops along the way?” and Ask Maps draws on information from over 300 million places, including reviews from a community of more than 500 million contributors, to produce clear directions, estimated arrival times, and insider tips from real people, like how to find a hidden hiking trail or get a free entry ticket. The kind of knowledge that used to require an hour of browser tabs.

Personalisation is built into the experience from the start. Your results are shaped by the places you have previously searched for or saved in Maps. So if you ask for a spot to meet friends after work, something like “My friends are coming from Midtown East. Any spots with a cosy aesthetic and a table for four at seven tonight?”, Ask Maps already knows you prefer vegan restaurants and filters accordingly, surfacing midway options without you needing to spell that preference out.

Once you have a place in mind, Ask Maps makes it straightforward to act on it. You can book restaurant reservations, save places to a list, share them with friends, and navigate there in a few taps.

Ask Maps is uniquely helpful, tapping into Maps’ fresh information about the world to show you everything you need to know before you go, personalising responses to you, and making it easy to turn plans into action.

Miriam Daniel, VP & GM, Google Maps

On privacy, Daniel addressed concerns directly in a pre-launch briefing, stating that Ask Maps is not linked to any other apps or personal data outside of Maps. However, according to TechRadar, when asked whether Ask Maps results could one day include ads or paid placements, Google did not rule that out. This is worth keeping in mind when evaluating how much weight to give the feature’s recommendations. Writing for Android Central, one reviewer describes it as being like looking at a video game map, and frames that as a good thing: richer, more spatially coherent, and far easier to parse at a glance. The update directly addresses a genuine usability frustration. As the reviewer puts it, having to constantly zoom in just to make sure you’re not losing your mind is not an uncommon experience with the current interface. Immersive Navigation proposes a clearer, more hands-free experience that can be read with a quick glance.

Now, your map comes to life with a vivid 3D view that reflects the buildings, overpasses, and terrain around you. The map now gives you a broader view so you can see what is coming before you need to react. Smart zooms and transparent building overlays let you look through structures and prepare for tricky turns and lane changes well in advance, rather than discovering them at the last moment.

More natural voice guidance. The robotic GPS voice is being replaced with something that sounds more like a person navigating with you. Rather than “Turn left in 200 metres,” you might hear “Go past this exit and take the next one for Illinois 43 South,” paired with visuals that clearly highlight your next step. For long drives and unfamiliar roads, that shift in tone could make the experience noticeably less stressful.

Transparent tradeoffs on alternate routes. Maps processes over five million traffic updates every second globally. With this update, it also tells you clearly what a route switch actually means: a longer trip with less traffic, or a faster one with a toll. Real-time disruptions like road construction and crashes, sourced from a driver community that contributes more than 10 million updates every single day, are surfaced as live alerts along your route.

Guidance all the way to the front door. Before you set off, you can preview your destination and its surroundings using Street View imagery and get parking recommendations. As you approach, Maps highlights the building’s entrance, nearby parking, and which side of the street to be on. The last-mile problem, the bit where navigation declares you have arrived, but you are staring at a loading dock, is something Immersive Navigation is specifically designed to fix.

Who gets it, and when

Both features are live from today, 12 March, but the rollout is staggered and, for now, US-centric.

Ask Maps is available now in the US and India on Android and iOS, with desktop support coming soon. Google has not confirmed a timeline for expansion to other markets. Unfortunately, those in regions such as Southeast Asia, Europe, and Australia can expect to wait, although no specific date has been announced.

Immersive Navigation is rolling out in the US today on iOS and Android. Google confirms it will expand over the coming months to eligible iOS and Android devices, CarPlay, Android Auto, and cars with Google built-in. The word “eligible” suggests there may be hardware requirements, likely around processing capability, though Google has not specified what those are. Users outside the US, or on older devices, do not yet have a confirmed availability date.

It is also worth noting that Immersive Navigation is not an instant, universal update even within the US. Google’s standard staged rollout means some users may not see the new experience in their app for days or weeks after launch.

Why This Update Feels Different

Google has been adding Gemini to Maps incrementally throughout 2025 and into early 2026. In November 2025, it introduced landmark-based navigation for walking routes, letting the app reference nearby buildings rather than just distances. In January 2026, it brought Gemini-powered support to cycling navigation, letting riders query the AI about their surroundings, get ETAs, and even ask it to send a message on their behalf.

This March update represents the most comprehensive Gemini integration yet, and the first time these capabilities have been applied to the core driving experience at any meaningful depth.

The practical question for users is whether these features perform as well in real conditions as they do in Google’s demos. The Ask Maps examples Google has chosen to highlight are carefully curated to show the feature at its best. How it handles ambiguous queries, locations with limited community data, or niche use cases is not yet established from independent testing. Immersive Navigation’s 3D view is similarly only as good as the Street View and aerial imagery underpinning it, which varies in quality and freshness by location.

What is not in question is the scale of ambition. Google is not treating Maps as a mature product that needs incremental polish. It is treating it as a platform for reimagining, and Gemini is the engine making that possible. Whether Ask Maps eventually carries advertising, how quickly Immersive Navigation rolls out globally, and whether the privacy commitments Daniel described hold over time are all questions that the company’s future decisions will answer. For now, the update is the most substantive change to Google Maps in years, and that alone is worth paying attention to.

Think about the last time you drove somewhere unfamiliar.
