{"id":33581,"date":"2026-03-05T01:56:36","date_gmt":"2026-03-04T17:56:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=33581"},"modified":"2026-03-05T01:56:36","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T17:56:36","slug":"ex-actor-edmund-chen-allowed-to-travel-abroad-as-he-awaits-date-of-appeal-against-jail-sentence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=33581","title":{"rendered":"Ex-actor Edmund Chen allowed to travel abroad as he awaits date of appeal against jail sentence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->Former actor Edmund Chen has been granted permission to leave Singapore while awaiting the date of his appeal against a jail sentence for a traffic accident.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">District Judge Shawn Ho approved Chen\u2019s application to travel to China for business from March 17 to 26 and to Japan for a personal trip between April 15 and May 3. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Chen\u2019s bailor will have to furnish an additional $10,000 during the periods of his travel on top of the existing $15,000 bail. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Identified in court documents as Tan Kai Yuan, the 64-year-old was sentenced to five days\u2019 jail on Jan 29 after pleading guilty to one count of causing grievous hurt to a motorcyclist. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He was also disqualified from driving for five years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The judge had<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/courts-crime\/ex-actor-edmund-chen-jailed-5-days-over-aye-accident-that-caused-motorcyclist-to-suffer-fractures?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\"> imposed the jail term<\/p>\n<p><\/a> despite the prosecution asking for only a fine of between $3,000 and $5,000. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Chen was initially granted a deferment for his sentence to begin on March 9, but he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/courts-crime\/former-actor-edmund-chen-appealing-jail-term-over-aye-accident-which-injured-motorcyclist?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">submitted an appeal<\/p>\n<p><\/a> against the sentence on Feb 2. His sentence was stayed on Feb 6 pending the outcome of his appeal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He also changed his team of lawyers from Mr Josephus Tan and Mr Cory Wong of Invictus Law to Mr Kelvin Ong and Mr Dickson Chew of Contigo Law. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Video footage played in court on Jan 29 showed Chen driving on <!-- -->the AYE<!-- --> towards<!-- --> <!-- -->the CTE<!-- --> around noon on March 4, 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Just before the point of collision, Chen slows down almost to a complete stop on the expressway before filtering abruptly into another lane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Deputy Public Prosecutor Stephen Yeo said this was because Chen had not formed up in the correct lane but still tried to enter the CTE\/<!-- -->SLE<!-- --> by braking abruptly and filtering against a chevron marking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The prosecution said Chen had failed to keep a proper lookout.
