{"id":33042,"date":"2026-03-03T03:28:52","date_gmt":"2026-03-02T19:28:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=33042"},"modified":"2026-03-03T03:28:52","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T19:28:52","slug":"language-matters-gen-z-loves-chinamaxxing-but-where-does-maxxing-come-from","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=33042","title":{"rendered":"Language Matters | Gen Z loves \u2018Chinamaxxing\u2019, but where does \u2018maxxing\u2019 come from?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\"><span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Chinese New Year<\/span> might soon be concluding, but that doesn\u2019t mean you cannot continue this \u201cvery Chinese time\u201d of your life.<\/div>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">After all, we are in the thick of a social media trend of \u201c<span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">becoming Chinese<\/span>\u201d, popularised by Gen Z, in which the norms and traditions typically associated with Chinese culture are embraced, particularly by non-Chinese in the West: <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">sipping hot water<\/span>, wearing house slippers, consuming traditional Chinese medicine, acquiring \u201cmade in China\u201d products, practising <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">tai chi<\/span> \u2026<\/div>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Such \u201cChinamaxxing\u201d has come to global attention in recent times. It was sparked by X user @girl__virus\u2019 post in April 2025, stating, \u201cyou met me at a very chinese time in my life\u201d \u2013 a parody of <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Fight Club<\/em>\u2019s \u201cYou met me at a very strange time in my life\u201d \u2013 and Chinese-American <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">TikTok<\/span> content creator Sherry Zhu\u2019s tongue-in-cheek instructions on becoming a \u201cChinese baddie\u201d a few months ago.<\/div>\n<div class=\"image-inline-container e1a5rv550 css-1llrc1m e1yqhwb40\" data-qa=\"Component-renderMap-StyledDiv\">\n<div class=\"image-inline caption e1fvabeq0 css-19sk4h4 ea9pn0s0\" data-qa=\"Component-Container\">\n<figure class=\"image-inline caption ea9pn0s1 css-12vv9w2 e1gf69pb0\" data-qa=\"ArticleImage-ArticleImageContainer\">\n<div data-qa=\"ArticleImage-handleRenderImage-ImageContainer\" class=\"css-0 e1gf69pb3\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A still from a social media video shows how Westerners are embracing aspects of Chinese culture by adopting habits such as drinking warm water. As a clipping of the noun or adjective maximum<em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">,<\/em> in use from the mid-1800s, you could spend US$200 max, or push yourself to the max. Clipping the verb maximise, you could, by the 1870s, max it. Later, from the 1970s onwards, as a phrasal verb, your car engine could max out at 7,000rpm, or you could max out at the gym or max out all your credit cards.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Fast-forward to the new millennium\u2019s virtual world, \u201c-maxxing\u201d \u2013 the doubled \u201cx\u201d possibly modelled after \u201c<span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">doxxing<\/span>\u201d for an internet slang aesthetic \u2013 describes the practice of optimising a specific aspect of one\u2019s life, often to an extreme degree.<\/div>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">It has roots in gaming slang \u201cmax\u201d \u2013 similarly clipped from maximise \u2013 and the term \u201cmin-maxing\u201d, used particularly in role-playing games, which is the character-building strategy of maximising a specific desired ability, skill or other power of a character, and minimising all other traits considered undesirable.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">From there, it developed into a suffix, attached to a noun, or sometimes an adjective.
