{"id":32123,"date":"2026-02-27T15:55:36","date_gmt":"2026-02-27T07:55:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=32123"},"modified":"2026-02-27T15:55:36","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T07:55:36","slug":"safeguarding-parliamentary-democracy-needs-integrity-courage-and-the-right-people-indranee-rajah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=32123","title":{"rendered":"Safeguarding parliamentary democracy needs integrity, courage and &#8216;the right people&#8217;: Indranee Rajah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>SINGAPORE: Singapore&#8217;s parliamentary democracy cannot be protected by laws alone \u2013 it requires integrity, courage and &#8220;the right people&#8221; in office, Leader of the House Indranee Rajah said on Friday (Feb 27).<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during the Committee of Supply debate for parliament, she pointed to recent events on the global stage that have created a sense that democracy is under siege, and warned that Singapore is not immune.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn some other countries, which have long been regarded as leading democracies, there is a sense that systems are breaking down, trust has been eroded, and once revered institutions have been rendered ineffective, compromised or even under direct attack,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She identified polarisation, populism, political contestation and performative politics as symptoms of democratic decline \u2013 trends visible both inside and outside parliaments around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can be thankful that our parliamentary democracy is not in such a parlous state.
