{"id":32087,"date":"2026-02-27T13:22:34","date_gmt":"2026-02-27T05:22:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=32087"},"modified":"2026-02-27T13:22:34","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T05:22:34","slug":"singapore-must-retain-ability-to-say-no-even-if-it-means-paying-a-price-vivian-balakrishnan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=32087","title":{"rendered":"Singapore must retain ability to say &#8216;no&#8217; even if it means paying a price: Vivian Balakrishnan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>SINGAPORE: Singapore must hold on to its ability to say &#8220;no&#8221; \u2013 even at a cost \u2013 or risk losing its relevance on the world stage, Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said on Friday (Feb 27).<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Speaking in parliament as he laid out his ministry&#8217;s priorities for the year, Dr Balakrishnan said Singapore will not shy away from staking out positions that may put it at odds with more powerful partners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>&#8220;If we ever lose that ability to say no, then that is the day that Singapore loses its relevance, indeed, our independence,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Singapore will work with any country where interests align, but will not choose a dominant power, Dr Balakrishnan said. Doing so would undermine the nation&#8217;s sovereignty and reduce it to a vassal state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>&#8220;We want to be useful, but not made use of,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We are successful because of our domestic unity, our economic relevance and vitality, and our defence capability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>&#8220;We may be small, but we have agency, we have resilience, and we have the resources and the will to back this up.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>The minister said Singapore would face more strategic dilemmas in an increasingly turbulent world, and that its interests would not always align with great powers, neighbours or other key partners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>\u201cOn some issues, we will have to say &#8216;no&#8217;, to say &#8216;no&#8217; courteously, respectfully and constructively,&#8221;<strong> <\/strong>he said, adding that this was not about choosing sides, but about protecting Singapore\u2019s national interests over the long term.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>He pointed to several examples of Singapore taking principled stands: calling out violations of international law, including Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine and the US\u2019 actions in Venezuela.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>&#8220;We spoke out about the need to preserve a rules-based trading system, including the principle of Most Favoured Nation in the WTO.
