They would then contact the victims through the messaging app while posing as their bosses, said the police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Some of the victims were instructed to participate in video calls via the Zoom video-conferencing platform, where scammers would digitally alter their appearance to impersonat<!-- -->e<!-- --> <!-- -->senior executives, investors, or officials from the Monetary Authority of Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The victims would be instructed to work on what the scammers called \u201cconfidential projects\u201d and made to sign \u201cnon-disclosure agreements\u201d to prevent them from discussing the \u201cprojects\u201d with their colleagues. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">They would be asked to provide confidential company information such as bank account balances, and transfer company funds for the \u201cprojects\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">They would realise that they had been scammed only after checking with their actual chief executive officers or supervisors on the \u201cprojects\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Businesses are advised by the police to brief their staff, especially new employees and interns, on this scam variant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">They should also be wary of any unusual requests to transfer company funds, especially transfers of<!-- --> <!-- -->large amounts. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cAlways verify with relevant colleagues through a different medium such as phone calls or enterprise communication channels before proceeding with any out-of-the-ordinary instructions,\u201d said the police.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"portrait data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Those who encounter suspicious correspondences can call the<!-- -->\u00a024\/7 ScamShield helpline on 1799 to verify them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Nearly half a billion dollars was lost to scams in the first half of 2025, with almost 20,000 cases reported in Singapore, based on\u00a0<a
