But the 16-plus hours back to Singapore with a short layover in San Francisco gives me plenty of time to watch movies, clear emails, and generally question my life choices somewhere over the world’s biggest ocean. So I threw common sense into the wind and thought, why not try a spatial computing headset mid-flight?

Reality only hit once I boarded the Singapore Airlines Airbus A350 aircraft and looked around, where only Business and Premium Economy classes are available on this flight (SQ 33). I didn’t get to fly on the former, but Premium Economy is pretty much comfortable compared to standard Economy, yes, but it’s still a shared cabin. Not exactly the sort of place where you can casually put on a Vision Pro headset without attracting at least a few curious glances.

Thankfully, I had one of the single Premium Economy seats by the window – the kind solo travellers like me quietly celebrate. That extra elbow room turned out to be critical because there are no accidental headset bumps, and no worrying about leaning into someone else’s personal space. Just enough breathing room to actually try this without feeling awkward every five minutes.

And honestly? Once the headset went on, the flight experience shifted way more than I expected.

A private cinema experience

Premium Economy (on Singapore Airlines at least), seems to be the sweet spot to use the Vision Pro.

Photo: HWZ

Let’s start with the obvious use case: entertainment. Singapore Airlines already does in-flight entertainment very well. KrisWorld has a fine catalogue better than most airlines, and the Premium Economy screens’ output is large and sharp.

But Vision Pro changes how content feels rather than just how it looks.

Instead of staring at a seatback display, it becomes your own floating screen. You can size it how you like, position it comfortably, and – crucially – block out the cabin clutter. Meal carts rattling past, overhead announcements, someone negotiating aggressively with their blanket behind you…well, you won’t see them.

It doesn’t isolate you completely though, which is actually good on a plane. Especially if there’s an emergency (touch wood). You still hear announcements and catch movement. But mentally at least, it’s closer to watching something at home than in row 33.

I binged watched Apple TV’s insanely good Pluribus and two seasons of Severence and never really noticed how quickly time flew. When you’re immersed, time becomes slightly less oppressive.

Power is the practical consideration though. Vision Pro’s external battery will last roughly a couple of hours, so my own private AC outlet in Premium Economy becomes essential. Without that, I’m sure this experiment would’ve ended pretty quickly.

Still, compared with juggling headphones, seatback remotes, and sometimes awkward screen angles, watching movies on the Vision Pro on an airplane felt surprisingly natural after a while.

Of course you’ll look ridiculous (and that’s ok)

There’s no delicate way to say this: wearing a mixed reality headset on a plane is not subtle. You will feel self-conscious at first.

I definitely did. Looks from fellow passengers on the aisle across me ranged from curiosity to mild amusement. Cabin crew, to their credit, treated the whole thing like it was completely normal. No fuss, no questions – just the usual professional Singapore Airlines service rhythm.

And honestly, after the first couple of hours, you stop caring. Noise-cancelling headphones once looked antisocial too. Now almost everyone in the cabin (headsets, not earphones, are provided in Premium Economy) wears them before takeoff.

In terms of comfort, let’s just say moderation is key as you would when wearing the Vision Pro or any headset at home. Of course, I didn’t keep the Vision Pro on for five straight hours. Sessions of one to two hours worked best: watch one or two episodes, take it off, stretch, hydrate, pretend to sleep, repeat.

Premium Economy helped here again. The recline, leg rest, and slightly wider seat reduce neck fatigue. I suspect using Vision Pro continuously in standard Economy would feel a lot more restrictive. It’s definitely doable, but I’m sure it’ll be less pleasant.

I also tried some light work. Having my email and browser floating in front of do make laptop displays feel cramped by comparison. Editing documents, reviewing notes, casual browsing – all manageable with an Apple Magic keyboard.

But it’s also worth considering that this isn’t a productivity miracle. Turbulence happens, tray tables get occupied, and of course the dreaded jet lag. I wouldn’t plan serious work around it, but consider the Vision Pro as a different type of convenience rather than transformation.

And no, it doesn’t help you sleep. If anything, it tempts you to stay awake longer than you probably should – which any frequent SIN-US traveller knows is already a dangerous game.

Making long-haul flight feels shorter

Using a mixed reality headset on an ultra long-haul flight might be more fun than you think.

Photo: HWZ

This was the part I didn’t expect.

Long-haul flights are as mentally repetitive as they are physically exhaustive, and not even good entertainment can fully mask that. Think about it; you’re literally stuck on the same seat for 16 hours and longer, watching on the same screen and just not having much to do.

But Vision Pro brought unexpected variety to my routine flights. Changing environments – even simple virtual backdrops – breaks that monotony slightly. It’s not escapism in the sci-fi sense, but psychologically it reduces that “still not there yet?” feeling.

For Singapore travellers who regularly do US or Europe routes, that matters. Those journeys can easily exceed half a day door-to-door. Anything that reduces perceived travel fatigue is worth exploring.

Would I pack it again? Probably, but selectively. A 7-hour flight to, say, Tokyo, is more than bearable and makes using the Vision Pro less appealing for the hassles needed to carry onboard and setup. What about class? Premium Economy with single-seat layouts seems like the sweet spot: enough space to use it comfortably, but still a realistic travel scenario. Business class obviously makes things easier, but that’s not how most “common” people fly all the time anyway.

That said, there are expectations to manage. It won’t transform air travel overnight. Sleep still matters more. Hydration still matters more. And sometimes, honestly, just staring out the window somewhere over the Pacific is still the simplest reset.

But as a personal entertainment upgrade, occasional productivity tool, and mental break from ultra-long-haul monotony, the Vision Pro held up better than I thought it would.

Read more:

Bringing the Apple Vision Pro on a long-haul trans-Pacific flight might have sounded ridiculous to friends when I was packing in San Diego.
