2020, when Covid-19 restrictions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/community\/drop-in-marriages-and-divorces-in-2020-due-to-covid-19-restrictions?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">upended many wedding plans<\/p>\n<p><\/a>.<!-- -->\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">There were 24,687 marriages in 2025, a 6.2 per cent fall from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/fewer-marriages-in-singapore-in-2024-greater-marital-stability-for-recent-marriages?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">26,328 unions in 2024<\/p>\n<p><\/a>, according to data on the Department of Statistics website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Academics who study marriage and parenthood said that a 6.2 per cent fall is significant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">They noted that the 2025<!-- --> <!-- -->figure, which<!-- --> <!-- -->is preliminary, also marked the third straight year of<!-- --> <!-- -->declining marriages since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/record-number-of-marriages-fewer-divorces-in-2022?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">post-pandemic high of 29,389 marriages in 2022<\/p>\n<p><\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">They said the continued slide in marriages is likely to weigh on Singapore\u2019s ultra-low total fertility rate (TFR), which is the average number of babies each woman would have during her reproductive years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/2024-dragon-year-failed-to-boost-spores-total-fertility-rate-which-remains-at-a-low-of-0-97?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">TFR in 2024 was 0.97<\/p>\n<p><\/a>, while the 2025 figure has not yet been announced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But in January, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong said that he is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/spores-fertility-rate-has-not-stabilised-citizen-core-will-shrink-without-action-dpm-gan?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">\u201cnot likely to give good news on the TFR front\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/a> for 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">At an Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) conference, he said that past dragon years had seen a baby blip, which is a temporary increase in birth rates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But the TFR for 2024, a dragon year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/community\/2024-the-year-in-singapore-the-dragon-failed-to-deliver-the-stork?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">remained the same as for 2023<\/p>\n<p><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He said: \u201cMany people think our TFR has stabilised. So, I keep telling people \u2018no, not quite\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe (dragon year) blip has allowed it to stay at 0.97, which means I think it will continue to come down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"responsive-iframe-base none\" title=\"dynamic_iframe_wrapper\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/TPcDd\/2\/\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"accelerometer;undefinedclipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\" loading=\"lazy\" data-testid=\"responsiveIframe\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Dr Mathew Mathews, principal research fellow at IPS, pointed out that the number of marriages has fallen in consecutive years since 2022, after the post-pandemic wedding rush when many couples who had postponed their weddings in 2020 tied the knot in 2021 and 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In 2020, 22,651 couples said \u201cI do\u201d \u2013 the lowest number since 2005, when 22,992 couples wed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Professor Jean Yeung from the National University of Singapore\u2019s Department of Paediatrics said the fall in marriages in 2025 can be partly attributed to a decrease in the number of people of \u201cmarriageable age\u201d, particularly those aged between 20 and early 30s. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The uncertain economic future, higher cost of living and geopolitical tensions could also have dampened nuptial plans, said Prof Yeung, who is also president of the Singapore Population Association.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The academics also believed that the continued fall in marriages reflects longer-term shifts in the way Singaporeans perceive marriage these days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">People are marrying at a later age as they spend a longer time looking for the<!-- --> <!-- -->right partner or working on their relationship before they marry, Dr Mathews said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Dr Tan Poh Lin, a senior research fellow at IPS, noted the importance Singaporeans place on establishing their careers and financial security before they marry and have children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">As a result, <!-- -->the median age at first marriage<!-- --> has risen considerably for both men and women over the past two decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For men, it rose from 29.4 years in 2004 to 31.1 years in 2024, based on the latest available statistics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For women, the increase in median age was almost three full years, from 26.7 years in 2004 to 29.6 years in 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Dr Tan said there is also a \u201cgrowing minority\u201d who prefer to remain single, as they see marriage as unnecessary or at odds with what they want in life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cEven among those who still want to get married, a growing proportion may place less priority on dating and marriage relative to other life goals, viewing later marriage as the norm.<!-- --> <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u2018\u2018Or (they) find the process of dating to marry more difficult to navigate for various reasons, including fewer marriage-minded people in similar age ranges,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">With more people marrying later \u2013 or not at all \u2013 the TFR is likely to fall as a woman\u2019s fertility declines with age, the experts said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Prof Yeung added: \u201cIn Singapore, as in many Asian countries, marriage rate is the main predictor of the number of children because births outside of marriage are not socially or legally acceptable. So, it can be expected that if the number of marriages declines, the number of births will likely decline too.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Kelvin Ngian, a 41-year-old business owner, tied the knot with Ms Charmaine Cheong, a 32-year-old marketing manager, in November 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The couple met through friends and dated for about five years before<!-- --> <!-- -->saying \u201cI do\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe felt we were ready to spend the rest of our lives together.
