An immersive new exhibition devoted to Ponyo<\/em> \u2013 Hayao \u2060Miyazaki\u2019s hand-drawn 2008 \u2060fantasy film about a goldfish-like girl yearning \u2060to be human \u2013 invites visitors, especially children, into his world through more than 100 original materials and hands-on animation tools.<\/p>\n

The show, which opened on February 14 at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, showcases rare artwork and production sketches from Studio Ghibli<\/span>, \u200cthe animation house Miyazaki co-founded, along with an interactive station that introduces young visitors to the basics of stop-motion filmmaking.<\/div>\n
\u201cPonyo<\/em> is a very special film in Hayao Miyazaki<\/span>\u2019s filmography,\u201d says Jessica Niebel, senior exhibitions curator at the Academy Museum. \u201cChildren are very close to his heart, and he likes to make movies for \u2060a young audience. Ponyo<\/em> is probably the movie that\u2019s geared towards the youngest audience within his body of \u200cwork.\u201d<\/div>\n

Miyazaki, 85, is renowned as one of the world\u2019s greatest animators and is widely regarded as \u201cthe Walt Disney of Japan\u201d.<\/p>\n

Ponyo<\/em>, based on the 1837 Hans \u200cChristian Andersen fairy tale \u201cThe Little Mermaid\u201d, tells the story of a young goldfish-like princess living in the ocean who becomes stranded on land, where she is helped by a five-year-old human boy named Sosuke. As they bond, Ponyo desires to \u200cbecome a human girl.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
