A shrinking youth donor pool also adds pressure to the national blood supply system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Here is what you need to know about blood donation:<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The <!-- -->Health Sciences Authority (HSA) and Singapore Red Cross monitor daily blood stocks and usage patterns<!-- -->, so that preventive action can be taken before the supply falls below the nine-day minimum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Falling below this level would be cause for concern, said <!-- -->Associate Professor Lina Lim from the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Blood donation rates tend to drop when people go on holiday, especially around festive seasons such as Chinese New Year or Christmas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The year-end period typically sees a drop in blood collection of <!-- -->up to 20 per cent, according to HSA\u2019s website<!-- -->. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Blood type O tends to be in high demand, as it is the <!-- -->universal blood group and is used during emergencies when patients\u2019 blood groups are unknown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cAs half of all patients in Singapore are of the O blood type and can receive only O blood, its supply can fall critically low,\u201d <!-- -->Prof Lim<!-- --> said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This happened in the<!-- --> two weeks leading up to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/group-o-blood-supply-at-critical-levels-donors-urgently-needed-red-cross-hsa?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">Chinese New Year holiday in January 2024<\/p>\n<p><\/a>, which saw demand for O blood spike amid lower-than-usual donor turnout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">To restore blood stocks to healthy levels, the Singapore Red Cross and HSA may appeal to eligible donors to come forward. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Surgery made up <!-- -->39 per cent<!-- --> of Singapore\u2019s blood usage in an annual estimate for 2025. This was followed by general medicine, which stood at <!-- -->32 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">About<!-- --> 10 per cent<!-- --> went to patients of blood diseases, including blood cancers. This is the same for cancer patients, excluding those with blood cancers and cancers requiring surgery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">About <!-- -->5<!-- --> per cent is estimated to be used by obstetrics and gynaecology patients. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">An estimated <!-- -->14 units<!-- --> of blood will be required <!-- -->every hour in Singapore in 2026<!-- -->. According to HSA, that translates to <!-- -->328 units every day or 119,720 units for the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The whole blood donation process takes 45 minutes to an hour, from registration to rest and recovery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Before the procedure, there will be a medical screening, which includes a <!-- -->health assessment, travel and social history, and measurements of blood pressure, pulse and temperature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">You will be given a local anaesthetic before the needle is inserted, so minimal pain is expected \u2013 <!-- -->only as much as a pinch on the arm, according to HSA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Whole blood donation, which involves unseparated blood in its complete form, typically takes <!-- -->five to 10 minutes<!-- -->. This is the most common type of blood donation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Depending on the donor\u2019s weight, about<!-- --> <!-- -->8 per cent to 12 per cent<!-- --> of their total blood volume will be taken during a donation \u2013 this means about<!-- --> <!-- -->350ml to 450ml<!-- --> of blood drawn each time.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"landscape inline-media-wrapper\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/a394c0e62a984d55156a2fabc5e2231f061883e2837839640c604d846b46d63c?w=480\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 720px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/a394c0e62a984d55156a2fabc5e2231f061883e2837839640c604d846b46d63c?w=720\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 721px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/a394c0e62a984d55156a2fabc5e2231f061883e2837839640c604d846b46d63c?w=900\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/a394c0e62a984d55156a2fabc5e2231f061883e2837839640c604d846b46d63c\" alt=\"\" class=\"aspect-landscape flex items-start shrink-0 object-cover landscape article-landscape mobile:w-auto tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/div><figcaption class=\"mobile:mx-16 tablet:mx-00 flex flex-col gap-08 py-16 desktop:pb-24\">\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-secondary\" data-testid=\"inline-media-caption-test-id\">Between 350ml and 450ml of blood is drawn from a donor during each whole blood donation session.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-placeholder\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\">ST PHOTO: KELVIN CHNG<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Another type of donation is called apheresis, where specific blood components are collected. <!-- -->Depending on the type of apheresis donation, the entire<!-- --> <!-- -->process can take <!-- -->up to 90 minutes<!-- -->.<!-- --> <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">A <!-- -->blood cell separator machine<!-- --> will draw blood from the donor and extract plasma, platelets or red cells from it. The remaining components will be returned to the donor through the automated process.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">After blood is collected, it goes through stringent testing at HSA\u2019s laboratories to check for diseases, blood group and antibodies. This process takes about<!-- --> 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Donors must be at least <!-- -->16 years old to be eligible for whole blood donations, or 18 for apheresis<!-- --> blood donations.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Since Jan 2, the maximum age limit for first-time blood donors in Singapore has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/age-limit-for-first-time-blood-donors-to-be-raised-to-65-from-jan-2?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">raised from 60 to 65<\/p>\n<p><\/a>.
