With these earbuds, Sony is claiming even better noise-cancelling performance, improved sound quality, and a more comfortable fit.

To start, Sony says the shape of the earbuds has been tweaked to fit more comfortably in the ears. It’s finished in a soft-touch matte material for better handling and comfort. It also has an IPX4 water resistance rating, which means you can wear it while exercising. It also comes in two colours: Black and Platinum Silver.

Noise cancelling duties are handled by the new HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3e and Integrated Processor V2 chips.

Photo: Sony

One of the highlights of these earbuds is the new HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3e and Integrated Processor V2 chips. These chips monitor sound from eight microphones (4 on each side, and up from 3), and together with the new foam-type Noise Isolation Earbud Tips, Sony claims the WF-1000XM6 cancels out 25% more noise than its predecessor.

The driver unit is said to be all new. Sony is quite coy on the changes, but it says that the unit uses new materials for the dome and edge. Sony also says that performance in the mid to high-frequency ranges sees the biggest improvement.

Battery life is unchanged. Voices are picked up using two mics along with a bone conduction sensor on each unit, while AI intelligently reduces unwanted ambient noise.

In terms of connectivity, the WF-1000XM6 supports Bluetooth 5.3, and supported codecs include SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3. Claimed battery life is up to 8 hours on a single charge with ANC on, while the charging case adds another 16 hours. The case charges via USB-C and wirelessly.

Certainly, these new earbuds sound like they could give Apple’s new AirPods Pro a run for their money. Apple’s newest earbuds have almost freakish levels of noise cancellation, and it would be amazing if these Sonys can top them. But as it is often said, the proof is in the hearing, and I can’t wait to try these earbuds out.

Availability and pricing

These new earbuds cost quite a bit more than its predecessor.

Photo: Sony

The Sony WF-1000XM6 will go on sale in Singapore in early March 2026 and will cost S$479.
