In fact, the title of <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">the movie<\/span> is technically <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">\u201cWuthering Heights\u201d<\/em> \u2013 quotation marks and all \u2013 to denote that this is something different.<\/div>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">The director ditches major characters and changes many plot points. Charli XCX songs dominate the soundtrack, and costumes look like they came from a deranged child\u2019s dollhouse. Perhaps the biggest difference between Fennell\u2019s and the original is that, in the new version, Cathy (<span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Margot Robbie<\/span>, also a producer) and Heathcliff (<span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Jacob Elordi<\/span>) consummate their forbidden love. A lot. They have torrid sex. He licks her face and sucks her fingers.<\/div>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">At the same time, <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Wuthering Heights<\/em> is still <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Wuthering Heights<\/em>, and the latest is an example of one of Hollywood\u2019s favourite hobbies: adapting classic novels about women in the 19th century over and over.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">It is the reboot culture that has consumed the mainstream studios, but with a twist. Whereas superhero stories are largely aimed at men, these appeal to a distinctly female fan base.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Fennell\u2019s film remains a story about Catherine Earnshaw, who is obsessed with Heathcliff, the \u201cgypsy\u201d boy her father brought home as an orphan. Cathy and Heathcliff still become childhood friends, and she still marries the wealthy Edgar Linton.
