So it is with the 2004 romcom <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Saving Face<\/em>, the first American film about an Asian-American lesbian couple to get a cinema release.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">The story of New York surgeon Wilhelmina \u201cWil\u201d Pang (Michelle Krusiec), her new love Vivian (Lynn Chen) and her pregnant \u2013 and, crucially, unmarried \u2013 48-year-old mother Ma (<span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Joan Chen<\/span>), <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Saving Face<\/em> was written and directed by the remarkable Alice Wu.<\/div>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Born to Taiwanese-American parents in California, Wu studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology aged just 16, then Stanford, before taking a job at Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">She enrolled in a screenwriting course \u201con a whim\u201d and wrote <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Saving Face<\/em>, a fictionalised account of how she came out to her mother, as her first script. Next, she left her job, moved to New York and gave herself five years to actually make the film.
