One of my biggest gripes with using WhatsApp for group chats is that new members are left out of the action, in the sense that they cannot see recent conversations and what has been discussed.<\/p>\n
Happily, WhatsApp is fixing this today with a new feature called Group Message History<\/b>. But the way it works is slightly different. Unlike rival messaging apps, which might let new members have access to all that was discussed previously, Group Message History lets admins choose how much they want to share with new members. <\/p>\n
From WhatsApp:<\/p>\n
When you add someone new to a group chat, you\u2019ll see an option to send recent messages to them – from 25 up to 100 maximum. This keeps things simple, ensuring new members only need to read the most relevant, recent context, and the whole group can easily see the messages that have been shared.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
WhatsApp emphasises that sharing message history is an intentional action<\/b> and that no history will be shared if the feature is not used. Admins will also have the option to disable this setting for their group, but will always be able to share message history if the need arises. Group Message History is also end-to-end encrypted like all personal messages.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, to ensure transparency, when message history is shared with a new member, everyone in the group will be notified.<\/p>\n
The feature is being rolled out gradually to all users.<\/p>\n
