Introduced 60 years ago, more Corollas have been sold than any other car. Over 50 million, in fact. The name has appeared on the back of sedans, hatchbacks, and even station wagons, but never on an SUV. This changed in 2020 when Toyota decided to slap it on the back of a compact SUV and called it the Corolla Cross. <\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Although the Corolla Cross is available as a petrol-only and a hybrid, only the latter is available on our sunny shores. <b>The hybrid comes in two versions: a 1.8-litre and a more powerful 2-litre<\/b>. On the outside, the entire front has been updated with <b>new headlights and a honeycomb-pattern grille<\/b>. The rest of the car is largely unchanged. If you were behind one, you\u2019d be hard-pressed to tell if it\u2019s the facelift model you were following.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">The combination of the new colour-matched front grille and narrow headlights gives the Corolla Cross a sleeker front fascia. I won\u2019t say it looks any more attractive than the model it replaces \u2013 just different. Overall, there\u2019s nothing ungainly or divisive about the way it looks. The best way to describe it is smart and pleasant. <\/p>\n<div class=\"_embedContainer_wioo3_16\" style=\"max-width:320px\">\n<div class=\"_container_1stzb_1\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi_webp\/yguTXPqHbhw\/sddefault.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"\/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/yguTXPqHbhw\/hqdefault.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"_facade_1stzb_5\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/yguTXPqHbhw\/hqdefault.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.5625\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><button class=\"_playButton_1stzb_12\" type=\"button\"><span class=\"_playButtonText_1stzb_39\">Play<\/span><\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">The layout of the cabin is the same, but the centre console and shifter have been refreshed. There\u2019s now space for two phones, with one pad doubling as a wireless charger, and a nicer-looking shifter. It\u2019s a welcome change, <b>but the cabin still mostly looks and feels basic<\/b>, and lacks the pizzazz of its rivals. Happily, it still relies on buttons for controls, so it\u2019s easy to adjust things like the volume and air-conditioning. <\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">To improve refinement, Toyota also says there are more sound-damping materials used throughout the car to reduce wind and road noise. Though the Corolla Cross is on the smaller side for an SUV, space in the front and rear is good. As demonstrated by the video above, <b>rear head and legroom should suffice for most folks<\/b>. My sole complaint is that the rear cabin space of the car is, like the front, quite drab and devoid of any kind of aesthetic flourish. Still, you get lots of cup holders and a pair of USB-C ports for charging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Boot space is merely alright. Toyota claims<b> 425L of capacity<\/b>, which sounds paltry, but the opening is wide, and the high roofline means it can probably stomach more than what the spec sheet suggests. And the good thing about SUVs is that if it can\u2019t fit, you can always make more space by folding down the rear seats. Under the hood, there\u2019s a 2L 4-cylinder naturally aspirated motor that works together with a small electric motor to produce <b>196hp and 190nm of torque<\/b>. It drives only the front wheels through a CVT. More importantly, claimed consumption is just 4.8L per 100km (20.8km\/l). To give these figures some context, it\u2019s like having the performance of a 2L car but the fuel consumption of a 1L. <\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">The Corolla Cross Hybrid feels sprightly. Toyota claims 0-100km\/h in 7.7 seconds and from the way it accelerates, that figure certainly feels attainable. For our roads, it has sufficient poke. It\u2019s quiet at a cruise, but it does groan loudly and feel quite rough when you ask more of it. Even when driven haphazardly and with a heavy right foot, the worst return I got (according to the trip computer) was 19.9km\/l. Over my entire weekend with the car, where I covered 360km, the trip computer showed <b>a fuel efficiency reading of 22.2km\/l<\/b>. It\u2019s a happy middle ground between comfort and sportiness. It deals with road imperfections adeptly and only gets unsettled by poor roads. The steering, as is the case with most cars of its type, is light and offers little feedback, but it is accurate and direct. Despite the peppy power output, the way it is set up means the Corolla Cross Hybrid isn\u2019t the type of car that will titillate the senses. The only things I can criticise are its bland interior and drone that it makes when it is being worked hard \u2013 none of which are outright dealbreakers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Sadly, its price might be a bigger stumbling block, especially in the face of the recent changes made to the PARF rebate scheme. Though it\u2019s priced quite competitively compared to its ICE peers, it\u2019s considerably pricier than its Chinese electric rivals. Add to that their swanky interiors and high-tech features, and the value proposition of the Corolla Cross Hybrid starts to look very hazy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Still, not everyone is ready for an electric car, and if that\u2019s you, the Corolla Cross Hybrid is worth a closer look.
