Baey Yam Keng shares father&#8217;s school-leaving cert showing old spelling of Tampines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Minister of State Baey Yam Keng has shared a photo of his father&#8217;s school-leaving certificate from 1954 \u2014 and it turns out Tampines was once spelt very differently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">In a Facebook post, Mr Baey, who holds portfolios in Culture, Community and Youth as well as Transport and who is also a Member of Parliament for Tampines GRC, revealed that his father was a student of Tampenis School from 1952 to 1954.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Yes, you read that right, and that was how Tampines used to be spelt.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mb-[-8px] mt-lg font-primary text-22 font-bold leading-1.5\">An unexpected family discovery<\/h3>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Mr Baey <span><a class=\"text-primary-500 hover:underline\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=1418078073008872&amp;set=a.261955211954503\" target=\"_blank\">wrote that he came across the certificate<\/a><\/span> while looking through his father&#8217;s belongings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">&#8220;I was going through my father&#8217;s old documents and found out that he studied at Tampenis (I didn&#8217;t know that&#8217;s how the school and road names were spelt during that time! Check out the certificate.) School for three years,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">&#8220;I didn&#8217;t know this part of my father&#8217;s life history. What a coincidence!&#8221; he added, referring to his current role representing Tampines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">A quick check shows that Tampines was named after the <span><a class=\"text-primary-500 hover:underline\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/heritagetrees.nparks.gov.sg\/ht-2003-116\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pokok Tampenis<\/a><\/span>, a tree that once grew abundantly in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Over the years, the name appeared in various forms \u2014 Tampinis, Tempines and Tampenis \u2014 until the Singapore Rural Board standardised the spelling to &#8220;Tampines&#8221; in 1939.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">However, the unofficial older variations persisted, including in school names such as the one on Mr Baey&#8217;s father&#8217;s certificate.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mb-[-8px] mt-lg font-primary text-22 font-bold leading-1.5\">Tampines or Tampenis?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Netizens were amused by the old spelling of Mr Baey&#8217;s ward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">&#8220;Did I just see tamPeNis?
