Walking, on the other hand, takes roughly 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the crowd and pace.

Teh herself recently moved back to JB after living in Singapore, a decision she has spoken about openly as a way to reduce rising rental costs. While she usually takes the bus, that evening’s gridlock prompted her to do what many others were already doing: follow the crowd and walk.

Image via @juin66 (Instagram)

What the video captures is a routine workaround for people who cross the Causeway every day.

The most notable part of the video isn’t the walking itself; it’s where the walking stops making sense.

On the Singapore side, there is a clear pedestrian path with proper signage. Once commuters cross into Malaysian territory, the conditions change abruptly.

The pedestrian route becomes inconsistent, then disappears entirely.

In Teh’s video, she and several others are seen standing on a narrow concrete divider, boxed in by fast-moving motorcycles on both sides.

At one point, she hesitates, waiting for a gap in the traffic while bikes continue streaming past. People behind her eventually make a run for it, forcing her to decide whether to dash across as well.

She nervously laughs it off, calling the moment “super scary”.

As the clip went viral, the comments section quickly turned into a mix of concern, frustration, and resignation

Some motorcyclists were quick to point out that the danger cuts both ways.

They described how terrifying it is to suddenly encounter pedestrians standing in traffic lanes, especially during peak hours when visibility is poor, and tempers are already stretched.

One rider summed it up bluntly, saying they often honk continuously when passing through that stretch, not out of anger, but fear.

In his words, “Everyone is just trying to get home alive.”

Others focused on how normalised this risk has become.

Several commuters said they walk the Causeway regularly, fully aware of how unsafe it is, simply because waiting for a bus can mean losing hours every week.

One Singaporean commenter admitted that while walking is dangerous, “you get used to it.”

A recurring point in the discussion was the feeling that this problem need not exist

Older commuters reminisced about the old CIQ days, when there was a continuous pedestrian path that families could use.

Some even shared personal memories, walking back after a movie at City Square, crossing together without having to dodge motorcycles or sprint through traffic.

That issue was raised repeatedly; the infrastructure once allowed people to walk safely, but the current layout does not provide for pedestrians once they reach the Malaysian side.

“When the causeway was built, there was a walking path, and you could walk on a proper pavement between Singapore and Johor Bahru.

“There is, in fact, still a walking path with signage on the Singapore side. It ends on the Malaysian side because the ‘new’ CIQ building and bridge, which replaced the old one, doesn’t have a walking path,” one Redditor commented.

Some netizens argued that a dedicated, sheltered pedestrian walkway could ease congestion

Their reasoning was simple: each person walking is one fewer person queuing for a bus, and buses stuck in traffic could improve the overall flow at the checkpoints.

However, others weren’t convinced.

Some expressed concern that a new walkway could be misused by motorcycles trying to bypass traffic, turning it into yet another “smart lane” rather than a safe space for pedestrians.

Still, many felt that these risks were manageable and better than the current situation.

Some also drew comparisons to Singapore’s pedestrian-friendly planning, with commenters saying a properly designed walkway would likely be welcomed by the public and even encourage healthier commuting habits.

Is walking across the Causeway even allowed?

Technically, walking across the Causeway is not strictly prohibited. However, authorities have long discouraged it due to the obvious safety risks, particularly during peak hours or bad weather.

This isn’t the first time the issue has appeared online.

In early 2025, an accident in this same stretch of the Causeway drew attention after a pedestrian was reportedly hit by a car while attempting to cross on foot.

The incident drew widespread attention at the time, with many questioning why pedestrians were still directed into active traffic lanes.

Will this change anytime soon?

The long-term solution is the Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS Link), expected to begin operations in December 2026.

Once completed, the rail connection is projected to carry up to 10,000 passengers per hour, significantly easing pressure on buses and private vehicles, and potentially eliminating the need for commuters to walk across the Causeway.

Image via MyMRT

Watch Teh’s video here:

Follow us on Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp for the latest stories and breaking news.
