{"id":26222,"date":"2026-01-06T13:47:41","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T05:47:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=26222"},"modified":"2026-01-06T13:47:41","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T05:47:41","slug":"hong-kong-artist-lau-wais-digital-clones-spark-identity-crisis-in-new-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=26222","title":{"rendered":"Hong Kong artist Lau Wai\u2019s digital clones spark identity crisis in new exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Lau Wai has a knack for making serious points with comedic flair.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">For the 2017 series \u201cProfile Picture\u201d, the Hong Kong artist, who uses they\/them pronouns, superimposed features from Japanese sci-fi anime characters on their own blurred headshots as a humorous reference to the genre\u2019s outsized influence on gender roles for Lau\u2019s generation.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">In 2018\u2019s \u201cThe Memories of Tomorrow\u201d, Lau reconstructed 20th-century <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Hollywood depictions of Hong Kong<\/span> with jarring, futuristic elements to highlight the staged nature of familiar settings.<\/div>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Lau\u2019s latest work harks back to that earlier interest in the construction of identity, but it has been made with the help of CGI animation and motion capture technology \u2013 tools the artist mastered over the past six years in New York \u2013 and is scaled up both in size and the breadth of the topics tackled.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cWhat if we\u2019re replaced by our digital replicas? What if our digital identities take over our physical identities?
