Magical illusions have existed as a form of entertainment for almost as long as human civilisation itself \u2013 think Tales of Khufu and the Magicians<\/em> from ancient Egypt \u2013 but despite its long tradition, why do so few consider it a performing art?<\/p>\n

Zenneth Kok is a professional magician and mentalist seeking to change Hongkongers\u2019 general perception of his craft with a 70-minute interactive mind-reading show titled The Memory Wall<\/em> this weekend.<\/p>\n

Kok, who has more than 20 years\u2019 experience in the international magic industry, acknowledges that his show is niche in a city like Hong Kong, but hopes it will be the first of many such performances around the world. Magic is, after all, more than meets the eye.<\/p>\n

He tells the Post<\/em>: \u201cHere\u2019s the thing about magic: the more I do it \u2013 especially in close-up performances \u2013 the more it feels like a display of skills and abilities.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can create a surprise and a moment of astonishment. But I started to feel like, \u2018Why don\u2019t I try to learn more about my audience?\u2019 Not just \u2018look, here\u2019s what I can do\u2019, but \u2018what do you think?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Kok got his start in the magic community by watching local gambling films from the late 1980s and 1990s, such as Wong Jing\u2019s God of Gamblers<\/em>, starring Chow Yun-fat and Andy Lau Tak-wah.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
