You are ordering at a restaurant when the server asks what sort of water you would like \u2013 still or sparkling? \u2013 and the Chinese diners at your table, usually women but not always, chime in: \u201cWarm water\u201d.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Many Chinese believe that <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">drinking warm water<\/span>, or, more precisely, avoiding anything cold, is good for one\u2019s health. As a child, my mother tried to stop me from consuming cold food and drinks because \u201cit will make you sick\u201d.<\/div>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cThen why aren\u2019t Europeans and Americans dropping like flies?\u201d I would ask.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cBecause their bodies are different,\u201d came the stock reply, at which I would roll my eyes and continue sipping my iced fizzy drink or spooning ice cream into my mouth.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">I was a difficult child at times.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-inline-container e1a5rv550 css-1llrc1m e1yqhwb40\" data-qa=\"Component-renderMap-StyledDiv\">\n<div class=\"image-inline caption e1fvabeq0 css-19sk4h4 ea9pn0s0\" data-qa=\"Component-Container\">\n<figure class=\"image-inline caption ea9pn0s1 css-1qeofuq e1gf69pb0\" data-qa=\"ArticleImage-ArticleImageContainer\">\n<div data-qa=\"ArticleImage-handleRenderImage-ImageContainer\" class=\"css-0 e1gf69pb3\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A cold glass of water by the window. Many of my peers, and even people younger than me, still subscribe to the idea that cold drinks damage their constitutions.
