{"id":25254,"date":"2026-01-02T20:55:35","date_gmt":"2026-01-02T12:55:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=25254"},"modified":"2026-01-02T20:55:35","modified_gmt":"2026-01-02T12:55:35","slug":"former-restaurateur-lim-tse-wei-releases-his-debut-book-on-singaporean-food-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=25254","title":{"rendered":"Former restaurateur Lim Tse Wei releases his debut book on Singaporean food culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">While many professional chefs and home cooks trace their start in gastronomy to their grandparents\u2019 or parents\u2019 kitchens, that was not the case for Lim Tse Wei.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">In the opening chapter of his debut book of essays and recipes, <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Little Perfections: Eating in Singapore<\/em>, the US-based Singaporean writer and cook reveals: \u201cI did not learn to cook at my mother\u2019s side, or my grandmother\u2019s, and though my grandfather had been a cook for some years, we did not speak of it in the family.\u201d<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Instead, it was a book that set his culinary journey into motion. On the flight home after graduating from university in the United States, Lim devoured Anthony Bourdain\u2019s seminal confessional <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Kitchen Confidential<\/em>, drawn to <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">the late chef\u2019s zeal<\/span> for the craft.<\/div>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cIn Singapore, it\u2019s rare to hear about people who are genuinely passionate about what they do, and so <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Kitchen Confidential<\/em> was a window into this world,\u201d he explains. At 22, he was uncertain about his future, and cooking seemed like a viable anchor.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Another push came from Singapore\u2019s entrenched attitudes towards manual labour, which brushed against his personal beliefs. \u201cIf you grew up in Singapore, you are used to the idea that people who work with their hands are those who don\u2019t do well in school or aren\u2019t smart enough.
