{"id":24768,"date":"2026-01-01T00:55:35","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T16:55:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=24768"},"modified":"2026-01-01T00:55:35","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T16:55:35","slug":"spore-economy-grew-4-8-in-2025-strategy-must-be-refreshed-to-stay-competitive-pm-wong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=24768","title":{"rendered":"S\u2019pore economy grew 4.8% in 2025, strategy must be refreshed to stay competitive: PM Wong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013<!-- --> Singapore posted stronger-than-expected economic growth of 4.8 per cent in 2025 amid a changing global order and deepening geopolitical tensions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But Singaporeans must be realistic and know that sustaining this pace of growth will be challenging, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said on Dec 31 as he unveiled the latest figure in his New Year message. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">To remain competitive, PM Wong said Singapore cannot simply do more of the same and must \u201crethink, reset and refresh\u201d its economic strategies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On this front, he noted that the first set of proposals from the Economic Strategy Review will be released soon, and the Government will respond to them at Budget 2026. Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong heads the task force that the review \u2013 overseen by a team of younger office-holders \u2013 comes under.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong, who is also Finance Minister,\u00a0will deliver the Budget\u00a02026\u00a0speech in\u00a0Parliament\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/pm-lawrence-wong-to-deliver-budget-speech-on-feb-12?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">on Feb 12,<\/p>\n<p><\/a> when he is expected to address concerns such as job security and cost of living.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Explaining<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/business\/strong-job-market-wealth-gains-to-underpin-spore-retail-spending-in-2026-economists-say?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\"> the stronger-than-expected growth,<\/p>\n<p><\/a> PM Wong said Singapore had benefited from an artificial intelligence-related surge in demand for semiconductors and electronics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Global economic growth also turned out to be more resilient than anticipated, and the tariffs imposed by the US kicked in later and at lower levels than many had feared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">These factors led to unemployment and inflation remaining low and real incomes rising across the board, PM Wong said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Going forward, fractured trade and geopolitical tensions are not transient problems, but permanent features of a fragmented world.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In 2025, countries reconfigured trade networks and supply chains in the name of resilience and security, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/countries-should-find-ways-forward-together-even-if-us-is-not-involved-pm-wong-at-end-of-g-20-trip?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">geopolitical tensions deepened,<\/p>\n<p><\/a> PM Wong noted, citing the ongoing war in Ukraine, the precarious situation in Gaza, and clashes between Thailand and Cambodia over disputed border areas.<!-- --> <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Reflecting on the past year, he said it was a significant one as the nation commemorated 60 years of independence. Singaporeans also entrusted a new government with a clear mandate to lead the country in a changed world, following a general election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe will face more obstacles to growth, and inflationary pressures may intensify. As a small and open economy, Singapore cannot fully shield ourselves from these headwinds,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">While there will be more challenges and unknowns, Singapore can press on confidently as it is dealing with them from a position of strength, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Republic\u2019s international standing is high, and its brand is trusted and respected. Amid global uncertainties, many companies \u2013 including major players like Microsoft and promising start-ups \u2013 are seeking stability and turning to Singapore as a trusted base or a launch pad to the region, he noted. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong said that during his overseas visits, he saw how Singapore\u2019s reputation opens doors and creates opportunities for its businesses and people, with local firms carving out new niches and making their mark in places like Africa and Latin America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He said the Government will continue to support local companies as they expand, scale up and seize overseas opportunities. <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"PM Wong\u2019s New Year message: Singapore must be bold, creative and open to new solutions\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Bzld_8TQ7v8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">While Singapore looks outward for new opportunities, PM Wong said the focus remains firmly on improving lives here at home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cEconomic success is a means to an end. What matters is that every Singaporean benefits from the nation\u2019s progress,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong said that alongside the labour movement and employers, the Government will help every worker grow and progress in their careers, so they can see tangible gains for themselves and their families. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Beyond jobs, it will continue improving the basics in life \u2013 education, housing and healthcare \u2013 so that every Singaporean has security and peace of mind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He said the Government will uplift lower-income families through financial assistance and empower them to build a better future for themselves and their children, and also enhance support for people with disabilities and their caregivers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Even as the Government tackles these areas, it also has to confront longer-term challenges such as the country\u2019s rapidly ageing population and declining birth rates, said PM Wong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He said it will continue to support young Singaporeans who want to marry, settle down and have children, by addressing their concerns like housing, childcare and education. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe will create an environment where families can grow and thrive, and society remains vibrant and forward-looking. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThis also means staying open, and welcoming those who embrace our way of life as our fellow citizens,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singapore is also studying holistically the far-reaching implications of longer lifespans on healthcare, work and retirement, said PM Wong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">A Tripartite Workgroup on Senior Employment is reviewing strategies to enable seniors to work meaningfully in age-friendly workplaces, he noted. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This goes with efforts to strengthen retirement adequacy, especially for lower- and middle-income workers who need more support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Another long-term issue he highlighted was that of clean energy \u2013 \u201cour new frontier and next major challenge\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singapore will secure a reliable supply of clean energy to power the energy-intensive industries of the future, including artificial intelligence, with one strategy being to import green energy via the ASEAN power grid that has been a long-term project, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Republic is also pursuing its own clean solutions in parallel, including possible options like low-carbon hydrogen and nuclear energy, he added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">With complex challenges ahead, Singapore must be bold, creative and open to new solutions, PM Wong said.
