With such a massive bar to live up to, it was inevitable that the next entry in the franchise would stir up a lot of buzz. Amid the wait and excitement, GTA 6<\/em> has won Most Anticipated Game two years in a row at The Game Awards, but as development has stretched on, some have worried about its cost. Thankfully, at least one expert believes the game’s high production expenses won’t get passed on to gamers.<\/p>\n

In an interview with GamesHub, Obbe Vermeij, the former Technical Director at Rockstar North, denied the speculation about GTA 6<\/em> potentially costing $100, pointing out how Rockstar has made no such indication. At least one analyst has suggested that GTA 6<\/em> could cost between $80 and $100, even kickstarting a trend of higher-priced AAA games, but Vermeij disagrees. According to the GTA<\/em> series veteran, Rockstar will likely “make it a regular priced game and then make the money on the back-end” through its rumored online component, which could stay active for years to come, the same way GTA Online<\/em> has helped keep GTA 5 <\/em>alive.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Vermeij also believes “GTA 6 <\/em>will be the most expensive game ever developed.” Previous rumors have already posited that GTA 6<\/em> could have a budget as high as $2 billion, and its multiple lengthy delays will likely drive overall costs even higher. Amid such high production expenses, asking $80 or even $100 may make sense, but Vermeij points out how the franchise’s popularity could make up for the costs. The developer explained how Rockstar will likely want to attract the biggest player base possible, opening the door to higher revenues through an online component down the line, and keeping GTA 6<\/em> around the $70 mark would help with that.<\/p>\n

Rockstar has yet to confirm that GTA 6<\/em> will have an online multiplayer aspect, but multiple leaks and rumors have suggested as much. As Vermeij points out, having that live service side to the game would justify keeping a lower price in order to draw more users before recovering development costs through subscriptions, DLC, and the like.<\/p>\n

Vermeij also stated that GTA 6<\/em> could remain history’s most expensive game for the rest of time, pointing out how AI will likely reduce development costs. He’s not the first developer to express the sentiment, as Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2<\/em>‘s director has said AI could speed game development and let smaller teams push out bigger games. Vermeij says artists account for “maybe 70% of the cost of a game,” but spend a lot of time on repetitive work like rigging and fixing mesh issues, which AI could automate to save time. Still, other industry voices, including many gamers, have expressed distaste for AI, so it’s unclear how much the technology will affect games like GTA 6 <\/em>going forward.<\/p>\n
