{"id":21404,"date":"2025-12-19T22:36:35","date_gmt":"2025-12-19T14:36:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=21404"},"modified":"2025-12-19T22:36:35","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T14:36:35","slug":"most-valuable-party-approved-as-new-political-party-in-singapore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=21404","title":{"rendered":"Most Valuable Party approved as new political party in Singapore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE &#8211; <!-- -->The Most Valuable Party (MVP) is Singapore\u2019s newest political party, having received approval from the authorities eight months after its application was filed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This brings the total number of registered political parties here to 21.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">A notice published in the Government Gazette on the evening of Dec 18 said the party was registered under the Registry of Societies on that same day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The party was founded by restaurant owner Chia Yun Kai, 32<!-- -->, <!-- -->who joined the political fray earlier in <!-- -->2025<!-- --> in the lead-up to the May general election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Chia told The Straits Times that he had sent in the application in April. Although the party\u2019s official status took some time to materialise, he said he welcomed the move, which would give his party legitimacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe intention all along was to create something official&#8230; and now that things are, we welcome more people to join us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Chia had made public his intentions to contest East Coast GRC with his own party in the 2025 General Election, but wound up contesting Pasir Ris-Changi GRC under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/ge2025-indranees-team-to-go-against-sda-over-pasir-ris-changi-grc?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA)<\/p>\n<p><\/a> banner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The opposition coalition, comprising the Singapore Justice Party (SJP) and Singapore Malay National Organisation, garnered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/ge2025-pap-wins-pasir-ris-changi-grc?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">32.34 per cent of the votes against the PAP.<\/p>\n<p><\/a> Mr Chia was then a member of the SJP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">MVP\u2019s registered address is a unit at Icon Village \u2013 a mall in Tanjong Pagar \u2013 which houses Mr Chia\u2019s mala eatery. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Registry of Societies website states that the average processing time under the normal registration process may be two months or more. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), which oversees the registry, confirmed that the application was received on April 11. The Writ of Election was issued days later on April 15, with Nomination Day set for April 23.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Responding to queries from ST on the processing time, MHA said the registry evaluates every application carefully.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201c(It) must satisfy itself that the proposed society will have proper management and governance, will be used for lawful purposes, and will not undermine Singapore\u2019s national security or interests before approving its registration,\u201d said the ministry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Chia declined to reveal the current number of party members, as well as their identities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He added that MVP would likely contest as a standalone party in the next election and \u201cput up a good fight wherever we\u2019ll be at\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Chia is no longer a member of the <!-- -->SJP<!-- -->, confirmed SDA chief Desmond Lim, as he had submitted his resignation following the May 4 election \u201cto pursue his political ambitions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">When told of MVP\u2019s status as an official political party, Mr Lim said: \u201cCongratulations and best wishes for his political endeavours!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Forming a society requires at least 10 founding members, and requires paying an application fee of $300 or $400.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Documents required in the application process include the society\u2019s Constitution, written in English, as well as any letters of approval or support from relevant stakeholders where necessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In the case of a political association, membership is restricted to only Singapore citizens, and such groups cannot be affiliated with any organisation outside of Singapore that is considered contrary to the country\u2019s national security or interest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Over the years, a number of new political parties have been registered, including Red Dot United (RDU) and Singapore United Party (SUP) in 2020, and Progress Singapore Party (PSP) in 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The three newest parties had all contested in the latest election, albeit in losing efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The PSP burst onto the scene in 2020, doing well enough in West Coast GRC to secure two Non-Constituency MP spots as the best losers in that election. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It struggled to repeat its showing in 2025 and saw its overall vote share decrease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In May, RDU fielded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/ge2025-how-did-rdu-scale-up-from-contesting-1-constituency-in-2020-to-4-in-ge2025?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">second-highest number of opposition candidates,<\/p>\n<p><\/a> at 15, which was 11 fewer than the Workers\u2019 Party\u2019s candidates. Within five years of RDU\u2019s formation, it went from contesting one constituency \u2013 Jurong GRC in 2020 \u2013 to four.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The SUP, formed after the 2020 election, contested only Ang Mo Kio GRC at the recent polls.
