As far as concert openers go, some say the bigger the better.<\/p>\n

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra took that to heart on December 11 by starting their Nordic-inspired programme with a downright noisy and massively orchestrated work by Finnish composer-in-residence Esa-Pekka Salonen, which was conducted by his mentee and fellow countryman Tarmo Peltokoski, also the orchestra\u2019s music director designate<\/span>.<\/div>\n

When it boiled down to a choice between Salonen\u2019s portrayal of the eccentric Castor and his immortal, non-identical twin Pollux from Greco-Roman mythology, it was the former and far more extroverted brother that \u201cgot the gig\u201d this time. (Pollux will get his turn in July 2026).<\/p>\n

Hyperactivity prevailed for the most part in Castor<\/em>, which saw a significantly embellished HK Phil \u2013 including two sets of timpani, a celesta doubling piano, and a harp \u2013 seemingly stretched to their dynamic limit and the extremities of their registers.<\/p>\n

Relishing Salonen\u2019s score and its inherent wildness, Peltokoski never held back as he steered the frenetic activity with skill and kept a tight rein on the top-notch orchestral virtuosity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
