Hong Kong cinema had many martial arts heroines beyond Michelle Yeoh<\/span>, and some were bigger stars locally. Here, we look at some lesser-seen films featuring three of the city\u2019s top female fighters.<\/div>\n

1. Righting Wrongs (1986) \u2013 Cynthia Rothrock<\/h3>\n
American martial arts expert Cynthia Rothrock<\/span>, who had debuted with Yeoh in the cop hit Yes, Madam!<\/em><\/span>,<\/em> was on a roll when she starred in Righting Wrongs<\/em> \u2013 also known as Above the Law<\/em>.<\/div>\n
Directed by Corey Yuen Kwai<\/span>, who had discovered Rothrock while scouting for talent in the US and brought her to Hong Kong, this was the closest she had come to a fully fleshed-out starring role.<\/div>\n
Although she shares top billing with Yuen Biao<\/span>, Rothrock steals the show and delivers her best performance in a Hong Kong film.<\/div>\n

Righting Wrongs<\/em> was as much a drama as an action film, and Rothrock was called upon to deliver dramatic acting and martial arts.<\/p>\n

Although she had no formal acting training, she proved surprisingly adept at drama, and even engaged in a convincing, metaphor-laden debate with Yuen about how his vigilante practices related to the operations of his giant toy train set.<\/p>\n

The story is brutal and lean, drawing inspiration from violent US works like the vigilante movie Death Wish<\/em>. It stars Yuen as a crown prosecutor who is also a kung fu expert, which is more believable on screen than it sounds. Yuen goes outside the law to kill criminals who manage to escape conviction.<\/p>\n

Rothrock plays a Hong Kong CID detective who is tailing him because she dislikes vigilantes. It culminates in a grim finale.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
