The livestream was mostly focused on games, as expected, but one but unexpected hardware announcement was Sony’s new PlayStation-branded gaming monitor.

The monitor bears the rather unceremonious name of ‘27-inch Gaming Monitor with DualSense Charging Hook’, but at least it tells you what you need to know. The charging hook, which supports both DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers, does also stow away neatly in the back of the monitor, which doesn’t make it an eyesore when you’re not using it.

<picture></picture>Play

Apart from the 27-inch size, the monitor uses a 2560×1440 IPS panel, capable of variable refresh rate. As it uses standard HDMI 2.1 and DP 1.4 connectors, the monitor is also compatible with PCs and Macs. And speaking of refresh rates, there’s two different caps depending on whether you’re using it with a console or a desktop; it caps out at 120Hz for the PS5 and PS5 Pro, and goes up to 240Hz for PC and Mac.

Sony also says that the monitor has HDR support with Auto HDR Tone Mapping, a feature for PS5 which can typically be found on Sony’s Bravia TVs. As the name suggests, the monitor will automatically adjust its HDR settings during setup of your PS5 and PS5 Pro console.

The monitor also has a USB hub, though the number of ports is relatively small at two USB-A and one USB-C port. However, PlayStation Link USB Adapters, used for low-latency wireless audio with PlayStation Pulse headsets, are compatible with them.

In addition to the monitor, Sony also announced a new, cheaper PS5 that’s region-locked to Japan. If that sounds familiar, Nintendo tried a similar strategy when it released its region-locked Switch 2 that also went for a cheaper price, though Sony may be a little bit late to the game with this one. The Japan-only PS5 was announced to go for ¥55,000 (~S$460).

Pricing and Availability

The monitor currently doesn’t have a price, but we do know that it’ll be released in 2026. Unfortunately though, it’s only set to come out in the United States and Japan. Sony stated that details about its pricing and launch date will be announced in the coming months, so we’ll have to wait until then to see if it’ll come to our shores.

Sony held a State of Play Japan a little while back, a special PlayStation broadcast centred on the Japanese and Asian market.
