This week\u2019s Game Awards featured plenty of exciting game reveals for titles that will make up the next few years of gaming releases. Some, like Highguard<\/em>, are right around the corner, while others, like Exodus<\/em>, are a little further away. But the good news is that one title many thought wouldn\u2019t be released until 2030 at the earliest is coming sooner than that. <\/p>\n

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic<\/em><\/strong> was one of the biggest titles revealed during The Game Awards 2025. Its existence was a well-kept secret heading into the Geoff Keighley-produced show, and it wasn\u2019t until the title card fully appeared that fans in the audience (and watching online) went nuts. And then, when it was revealed that original Knights of the Old Republic<\/em> director Casey Hudson is working on the project, enthusiasm shot through the roof. <\/p>\n

Of course, that enthusiasm for Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic<\/em> eventually tempered once fans realized that the game is likely in early development and won\u2019t release until at least a few years from now. How far along the game is and when it plans to release are unclear, but Bloomberg\u2019s Jason Schreier believes that the game won\u2019t hit until 2030, and that is an \u201coptimistic\u201d guess on his part. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s reasonable to assume a game of Fate of the Old Republic\u2019s scope and scale would take a long time to develop, and the 2030 release year makes sense. It\u2019s disappointing that gamers will have to wait so long to experience the next chapter in the Old Republic franchise, but that\u2019s what many of these Game Awards trailers do: they build hype for projects that are very early. Or at least, that\u2019s what we thought. <\/p>\n

\n udson Says Fate of the Old Republic Will Release Sooner

While he didn\u2019t cite Schreier\u2019s reporting directly, Casey Hudson did take to social media to say that Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic<\/em> won\u2019t require that long of a wait. He says that the game will be out before 2030, joking that he\u2019s \u201cnot getting any younger.\u201d <\/p>\n

Given development timelines and trends that we have seen on projects similar to Fate of the Old Republic<\/em>, Schreier\u2019s expectation of a 2030 release year makes sense. It\u2019s unclear if he has any sources that painted a picture of where the game is in development and its release targets, but with only a CG trailer to display, the assumption is reasonable. And Schreier is optimistic because he knows the realities of game development, where even the most conservative plans can sometimes fall apart as a project progresses. Just look at Grand Theft Auto 6<\/em>\u2019s journey to landing on its release date tells you all there is to know about the reality of shipping a big-budget, triple-A game. <\/p>\n

It does feel a bit like splitting hairs when it comes to Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic<\/em>\u2019s release date, though. The game isn\u2019t likely to release in 2027, or else there would have been a date on the trailer. That means 2028 is the earliest we might see the game, and that still feels generous. So, 2029 is perhaps where Casey Hudson\u2019s studio, Arcanaut Studios, is looking. <\/p>\n

Only time will tell when Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic<\/em> releases and who is \u201cright\u201d about when the game will ship. Even then, Casey Hudson and the dev team likely have every intention of getting the game in players\u2019 hands as soon as possible, but that doesn\u2019t mean there won\u2019t be obstacles on the way to release. <\/p>\n
