For thousands of years, horses have been important to humanity in both our greatest periods of innovation \u2013 as invaluable tools of transport and agriculture \u2013 and our darkest times of war, as smart and sturdy companions for soldiers.<\/p>\n

From the prehistoric cave paintings in France\u2019s Lascaux Cave to the monumental equestrian statues of Roman emperors, horses have been symbols of status, conquest and heroism.<\/p>\n

In later works of art, the animal plays a more complex role, often employed to convey man\u2019s appreciation \u2013 and exploitation \u2013 of the natural world.<\/p>\n

From paintings to books to plays, here are five notable works featuring horses as we get ready for the Year of the Horse 2026.<\/p>\n

1. One Hundred Horses (1728)<\/h3>\n

It was painted in 1728 for the Yongzheng emperor (1678-1735) by the Italian Jesuit missionary and court artist Giuseppe Castiglione, known in Chinese as Lang Shi-ning.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
