{"id":18002,"date":"2025-12-09T06:18:36","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T22:18:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=18002"},"modified":"2025-12-09T06:18:36","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T22:18:36","slug":"rich-human-dimension-how-the-albatross-file-sheds-further-light-on-singapores-separation-from-malaysia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=18002","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Rich human dimension\u2019: How the Albatross File sheds further light on Singapore\u2019s separation from Malaysia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When the race riots happened, barely a year after the merger of both countries, it was \u201ccataclysmic\u201d and \u201cshocked everybody\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The second document in the Albatross File was notes of Dr Goh\u2019s meetings with Malaysia\u2019s then-Deputy Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak, which took place immediately after the riots.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Tun Razak told Dr Goh that Kuala Lumpur was prepared to admit the People\u2019s Action Party (PAP) into a coalition government on two conditions: Mr Lee steps down, and the PAP keeps out of the Malay ground.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThey would never have accepted it,\u201d Mr Janadas said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This also happened right after the Malaysian general election in April 1964, where Mr Janadas\u2019s father Devan Nair was the only PAP member to win a seat.<\/p>\n<h2>POSSIBILITY OF LOOSER FEDERATION<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As tensions grew, many people in Singapore regretted their support for the merger, said Mr Janadas.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to Dr Goh\u2019s oral history, this was when Mr Lee and the PAP decided to increase political pressure and \u201corganise politically, up and down the Peninsula, and across Sabah and Sarawak\u201d.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cMr Lee, in his oral histories, says (Kuala Lumpur) could\u2019ve arranged for an accident \u2026 there were always huge, big lorries carrying timber, and then you arrange for the timber to be released, and your car is smashed, right? That\u2019s it,\u201d Mr Janadas recounted.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Tun Razak first suggested \u201chiving off\u201d Singapore around Dec 15, 1964.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">By then, Mr Lee, in his oral history, had already concluded that \u201cwe just could not carry on\u201d.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In March 1965, Dr Goh then wrote the most substantial paper on possible terms for a looser federation.
