{"id":16991,"date":"2025-12-05T08:05:36","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T00:05:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=16991"},"modified":"2025-12-05T08:05:36","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T00:05:36","slug":"exposed-online-pokemon-card-seller-who-allegedly-cheated-buyers-out-of-80000-on-carousell-charged","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=16991","title":{"rendered":"Exposed online, Pokemon card seller who allegedly cheated buyers out of $80,000 on Carousell charged"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">A 29-year-old man was charged in court on Dec 3 with cheating after allegedly duping Carousell buyers into paying $80,000 for Pokemon cards he didn&#8217;t have.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Stomper <span><b>John<\/b><\/span> said Eugene Kwek Yi Jun was exposed online by his victims after being accused of scamming people &#8220;for a long time&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">&#8220;Multiple police reports were made,&#8221; said the Stomper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">A Facebook user posted in a Facebook group called <span><a class=\"text-primary-500 hover:underline\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/zarkgames\/posts\/2994867864054567\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pokemon Trading Card Games Singapore and Malaysia<\/a><\/span> on Dec 1: &#8220;I encountered this Carousell seller &#8216;mrkwek&#8217; and he has been dragging delivery for me since launch until now. No delivery of goods, no refund. Now slow reply and still delaying.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">In the <span><a class=\"text-primary-500 hover:underline\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/PokemonTCG_Singapore\/comments\/1pb41h9\/mrkwek_acc_restricted_on_carou\/\" target=\"_blank\">PokemonTCG_Singapore<\/a><\/span> subreddit, other buyers also posted about their dealings with &#8220;mrkwek&#8221;, one of them <span><a class=\"text-primary-500 hover:underline\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/PokemonTCG_Singapore\/comments\/1n9ok83\/carouseller_awareness_post_mrkwek\" target=\"_blank\">in September<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The Carousell account under &#8220;<span><a class=\"text-primary-500 hover:underline\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.carousell.sg\/u\/mrkwek\/\" target=\"_blank\">mrkwek<\/a><\/span>&#8221; has since been disabled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Officers from the Commercial Affairs Department arrested Kwek on Dec 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The police said preliminary investigations revealed that Kwek had advertised the pre-order sales of limited-edition Pokemon trading cards on Carousell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">After the victims made payment via bank transfers, they did not receive the cards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">When questioned, Kwek would claim that the delivery was delayed and eventually became unresponsive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">He was believed to be involved in at least 111 of such cases with total losses amounting to at least $80,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Kwek was charged with cheating one victim who paid $1,800 after being deceived into believing Kwek had Pokemon cards for sale between Oct 23 and Dec 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The offence of cheating carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">According to his <span><a class=\"text-primary-500 hover:underline\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/eugene-kwek-18797329b\/\" target=\"_blank\">LinkedIn page<\/a><\/span>, Kwek has been a senior sales manager at PingPong Payments since June.
